Nigerian University Plagiarism Rules for Assignments and Thesis Work

The national policy behind the checks

The National Universities Commission (NUC) sets minimum academic standards that Nigerian universities must meet to stay accredited, and research integrity, including plagiarism prevention, is part of those standards. On top of that, a national anti-plagiarism verification mandate , tied to Nigeria's education repository infrastructure, pushes universities to run student projects, theses and dissertations through Turnitin or a similar similarity checker before they clear a submission. In practice, this means most Nigerian universities now require a similarity report before your final year project, master's thesis or PhD dissertation goes to your supervisor or external examiner for approval.

How the check actually works

Turnitin compares your submission against a database of published journals, books, websites and previously submitted student work, and returns a percentage showing how much of your text matches existing sources. That percentage is a starting point, not a final verdict, your supervisor opens the full report to see whether the matched text is properly quoted and cited, or copied without attribution.

Nigerian universities do not share one single national threshold. Each institution, and often each faculty or department, sets its own acceptable similarity percentage, commonly somewhere between 10 and 25 percent for a thesis, with tighter limits typical for shorter coursework assignments. A submission can still fail review under the threshold if most of the match traces to one uncredited source, and pass above it if the matches are correctly cited references spread across many sources.

Coursework and projects versus postgraduate theses

The stakes rise as you move from a course assignment to a final year project to a postgraduate thesis. A flagged assignment usually stays between you and your lecturer, resubmit with corrected citations, or accept a reduced grade. A flagged final year project or thesis involves your supervisor, your department's research committee, and sometimes your external examiner, since the document represents your core contribution to your field, not a single week's coursework.

For a postgraduate thesis, expect the similarity report to be reviewed at your defense or viva, not only at submission. An examiner who spots uncited overlap during your defense can send the whole thesis back for correction even if it initially cleared the similarity check.

Group projects and shared coursework

Turnitin also flags matches between students' submissions, not only matches against outside sources. Discussing an assignment with classmates is normal, but submitting text that closely mirrors a coursemate's writing can trigger a collusion finding even if neither of you copied from an outside source. Write your own submission independently after any group discussion.

If part of your programme is online or sandwich format

Part-time, sandwich or partly online postgraduate programmes sometimes submit theses through a different Turnitin account than the main campus system uses. If you are on such a programme, confirm with your department which similarity checker and threshold applies to your specific submission, since it is not always the same account your undergraduate coursework passed through.

What happens if you are flagged

1. Your supervisor or lecturer reviews the full similarity report, not just the percentage, and decides whether it looks like a genuine citation problem or deliberate copying.

2. Minor, first-time citation issues in coursework typically mean a resubmission with corrections, sometimes with a grade penalty.

3. Serious cases, including thesis or project plagiarism, go to a departmental or faculty research integrity committee, which can recommend anything from a required rewrite to suspension.

4. Confirmed serious or repeated cases go to the university's senate or a disciplinary committee, which can suspend or expel you, and for graduates later found to have plagiarized, some universities have withdrawn the degree already awarded.

Postgraduate school policies

Most Nigerian universities' postgraduate schools publish a standalone plagiarism or research integrity policy separate from the general student code of conduct, since a master's or PhD thesis goes through more review stages than undergraduate coursework. Check your postgraduate school's website or handbook for the specific similarity threshold and submission format it requires, since these details differ between universities even though the underlying NUC standards are the same.

How to protect yourself

• Cite every source at the point you use it in your draft, not as a final step, you will miss citations if you leave them until the end.

• Paraphrasing still needs a citation. Changing a few words while keeping the original sentence structure still counts as plagiarism.

• Ask your department whether you can run your own draft through the university's Turnitin account before final submission, many allow at least one self-check.

• Do not reuse a senior's old project as your base text even with edits. Departments keep archives of past projects specifically to catch this, and it counts as plagiarism regardless of how much you changed.

• Keep your own drafts and research notes. If a similarity flag comes up, being able to show your work developed over time supports your case.
