Post-Study Work Visas Compared: Australia 485, UK Graduate Route, Canada PGWP and US OPT for ASEAN Students
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 01, 2026 • Career Planning, Visas & Student Mobility
Australia, the UK, Canada and the US all let international graduates work after their degree without a job offer, but the length, cost and rules are different for each. Australia's subclass 485 gives 2-3 years, the UK Graduate Route gives 2 years now but drops to 18 months for applications from January 2027, Canada's PGWP matches your program length up to 3 years, and US OPT gives 12 months with up to 36 months total for STEM graduates.
🎓 Australia 485: 2 years for bachelor's and master's coursework, 3 years for master's by research or PhD
🇬🇧 UK Graduate Route: 2 years if you apply before 2027, 18 months after, 3 years for PhD
🇨🇦 Canada PGWP: length matches your program, up to 3 years for programs of 2 years or longer
🇺🇸 US OPT: 12 months for any major, up to 36 months total if your degree is STEM-designated
💵 Australia's 485 application fee rose to AUD 5,750 from 1 July 2026
📩 None of the four routes hand you permanent residency directly
Why the post-study work visa matters
A post-study work visa lets you stay and work in your study destination after graduation without a job offer lined up first. For ASEAN students choosing between Australia, the UK, Canada and the US, the length and cost of this visa often matter as much as tuition or program rankings. Rules changed in all four destinations between 2024 and 2026, so verify the exact terms before you commit to a country.
How the four visas compare
| Country | Visa | Duration | Sponsor needed | Application cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Australia | Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate | 2 years bachelor's and master's coursework, 3 years master's by research or PhD | No | AUD 5,750 from 1 July 2026 |
| United Kingdom | Graduate Route | 2 years bachelor's and master's if you apply before 2027, 18 months after, 3 years PhD | No | £937 plus £1,035 per year Immigration Health Surcharge |
| Canada | Post-Graduation Work Permit | Matches your program length, up to 3 years | No | CAD 255 |
| United States | Optional Practical Training | 12 months, up to 36 months total for STEM degrees | No, but the STEM extension needs an E-Verify employer | USD 470 online, USD 520 paper |
Australia's Temporary Graduate visa (485)
The subclass 485 visa covers graduates of CRICOS-registered courses of at least two academic years. Bachelor's and master's by coursework graduates get 2 years, while master's by research and PhD graduates get 3 years. You must apply within 6 months of finishing your course and hold or have recently held a student visa. Since March 2024, Australia assesses applicants against a Genuine Student requirement rather than the old Genuine Temporary Entrant test, and the age limit for most applicants dropped from 50 to 35, though master's by research, PhD graduates and Hong Kong BNO passport holders keep the higher limit.
UK Graduate Route
The Graduate Route needs no sponsor and lets you work in any job at any skill level. Bachelor's and master's graduates who apply before 1 January 2027 get 2 years, PhD graduates get 3 years regardless of when they apply. The UK government's May 2025 immigration white paper set out a cut to 18 months for bachelor's and master's applicants from 1 January 2027, reported by ICEF Monitor . Budget the £937 application fee plus £1,035 per year of the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit
Canada's PGWP length depends on your program. Programs from 8 months to under 2 years give a permit matching the program length, while programs of 2 years or more, and master's programs under 2 years, give a 3-year permit. Study permits themselves are capped nationally, at 437,000 for 2025 and up to 408,000 for 2026, so getting into Canada to start a PGWP-eligible program is now more competitive than it was before 2024.
US Optional Practical Training (OPT)
OPT gives F-1 graduates of any major 12 months of work authorization tied to their field of study. Graduates with a STEM-designated degree can apply for a 24-month extension through an employer enrolled in USCIS E-Verify , for up to 36 months total. Unemployment during OPT is capped at 90 days, plus another 60 days during the STEM extension.
What changed for 2025-26 applicants
Australia tripled the 485 application fee across two increases in 2026 and tightened the age limit and student genuineness test.
The UK confirmed the Graduate Route will shrink to 18 months for non-PhD applicants from January 2027.
Canada capped total study permits and added field-of-study and language rules for PGWP eligibility tied to when you applied for your study permit.
The US added enhanced social media screening for F-1 visa applicants from June 2025, which does not change OPT rules but affects getting the visa in the first place.
Choosing between them
If your priority is the longest guaranteed work window on a shorter degree, Canada's 3-year PGWP for 2-year programs and Australia's 3-year track for research degrees stand out. If cost matters most upfront, the UK and US routes carry lower application fees than Australia's 2026 pricing. Match the visa to your degree length and career field rather than picking a country on reputation alone, and confirm current fees and durations on the official page before you apply.
Work rights while you hold each visa
Australia's 485, the UK Graduate Route and Canada's PGWP place no restriction on the type of employer, sector or role. US OPT works differently: it ties your work to your field of study for the full 12 to 36 months, so a marketing graduate cannot use OPT time in an unrelated warehouse job the way a UK Graduate Route holder would.
How each path leads toward staying longer
None of the four visas grants permanent residency by itself, but each feeds into a longer-term pathway. In Australia, 485 holders typically build points for the skilled migration program through work experience, English scores and, in some cases, employer sponsorship. In the UK, Graduate Route holders who find a sponsoring employer switch to the Skilled Worker visa without leaving the country, and years on that visa count toward settlement. In Canada, PGWP work experience is often the main qualifying factor for the Canadian Experience Class under Express Entry. In the US, OPT is commonly used as a bridge into the H-1B specialty occupation visa, which is subject to an annual lottery cap, so many students apply for H-1B during their first OPT year to get multiple lottery entries before their work authorization runs out.
Matching the visa to your field
If you study engineering, computer science, or another STEM field, the US OPT extension gives you the longest single-country runway at 36 months, longer than any of the other three routes for a comparable degree length. If you study business, humanities or social sciences, the US 12-month term is the shortest of the four, and Australia, the UK and Canada give you more time to build local experience instead. Students on shorter diploma or certificate-level courses should check Canada's PGWP rules closely, since programs under 8 months do not qualify for a PGWP at all, unlike Australia and the UK where the 485 and Graduate Route are tied to full degree completion.
