TL;DR

Australia, the UK, Canada and Schengen countries each set a different minimum bank balance and require it in a different form. Canada no longer needs a GIC for most applicants, the UK wants funds held for 28 days, and Schengen amounts vary by which country you apply to.

  • 💵 Australia: AUD 29,710 minimum financial capacity for 2025, assessed under the Genuine Student test

  • 💵 UK: GBP 1,529 a month in London or GBP 1,171 a month outside London, for up to 9 months

  • 💵 Canada: CAD 22,895 a year for a single applicant from September 2025, GIC now optional

  • 💵 Schengen: no single amount, France asks about EUR 615 a month, the Netherlands about EUR 1,131 a month

  • ⏱️ Funds need to be held for a set period before you apply, not deposited right before

Proof of Funds Requirements Compared Across Australia, the UK, Canada and Schengen Visas for ASEAN Students

Why the amount and the form both matter

Visa officers check two things: how much money you have access to, and whether the money is proven the way their rules specify. A bank balance that meets the target amount but sits in the wrong account type, or was deposited too recently, gets rejected as often as an amount that falls short. Match both the number and the format before you apply.

This comparison covers the amount ASEAN applicants most often ask about first: a single applicant with no dependants travelling with them. Bringing a spouse or child raises the required amount in every destination covered here, so check the dependant addition on the official page if that applies to you.

Australia: Genuine Student financial capacity

Since March 23, 2024 , Australia assesses student visa applications under the Genuine Student requirement, which replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant test. The financial capacity component sits at AUD 29,710 for 2025, the amount you show for a year of living costs on top of tuition and travel. The genuine access to funds rule also expects a plausible history behind the money, not a single recent deposit, and accepts parental or spousal income above a set threshold as an alternative to a lump sum.

United Kingdom: monthly maintenance funds

The UK sets a monthly figure rather than an annual one. Under the current student visa money rules , you show GBP 1,529 a month if your course is in London or GBP 1,171 a month outside London, capped at 9 months of funds. The balance has to stay above the required total for 28 consecutive days, with the most recent day falling within 31 days of your application, a rule the Home Office has kept in place across several rounds of amount increases.

Canada: proof of funds without the old GIC shortcut

Canada's Student Direct Stream, which let applicants meet the financial requirement with a Guaranteed Investment Certificate alone, closed on November 8, 2024. Every study permit applicant now goes through the standard stream, where a GIC is one accepted option among several , alongside a Canadian bank account in your name, an education loan, or a funding letter from a sponsor. From September 1, 2026, the minimum living-cost amount for a single applicant rose to CAD 23,448 a year (as of September 2026), on top of tuition and travel.

Schengen countries: no single number

Schengen has no bloc-wide proof of funds figure. Each country's consulate sets its own minimum and reviews it separately. France asks for about EUR 615 a month, close to EUR 7,380 for a 12-month stay, according to Campus France guidance. The Netherlands applies an IND-set study norm of about EUR 1,131 a month for 2026 (EUR 1,094 for 2025), near EUR 13,200-13,600 a year, reviewed and adjusted once a year on 1 January by the Dutch immigration service. Germany runs its own blocked-account system entirely, covered separately since its EUR 992 a month figure works differently from a simple bank statement check.

Why these amounts keep rising

Australia, the UK and Canada each raised their proof-of-funds figures as part of wider changes to student migration policy running through 2024 and 2025, alongside caps on enrolments and tighter checks on genuine study intent. The increases track local cost-of-living inflation but also serve as a policy lever, since a higher financial bar reduces the pool of applicants able to qualify. Expect these figures to move again within a year or two rather than staying fixed, so re-check the official page close to your actual application date, not months in advance.

What counts as a valid sponsor across these destinations

Australia, the UK and Canada all accept a parent, legal guardian or spouse as a financial sponsor in place of your own funds, provided the sponsor's income and relationship to you are documented. France and the Netherlands work the same way through a formal attestation from the sponsor, backed by their own bank statements and payslips. None of these destinations accept a sponsor's verbal or informal promise, and all of them expect the sponsor's documents to be recent, typically issued within the past 1-3 months.

What to check before you submit

  • Confirm the current amount on the official page, since every country listed here has raised its figure at least once since 2023.

  • Match the account type to what the checklist asks for. A joint account, a fixed deposit or an employer-provided fund each get treated differently.

  • Build a paper trail. Salary deposits, business income or a documented gift each need their own supporting evidence, not just a closing balance.

  • Apply after the funds have seasoned for the required period, not the same week you top up the account.

  • Keep a copy of every financial document in both the original language and a certified translation if the destination requires one.
