PTE Academic for US Admission: Which Schools Accept It and How Scores Compare
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Sep 18, 2026 • Updated Sep 18, 2026
PTE Academic is a computer-based English test scored 10 to 90, and Pearson states it is accepted across US universities, including all Ivy League schools. Check your specific program's page to confirm, since not every school lists it alongside TOEFL and IELTS.
🎓 PTE Academic runs as one 2-hour computer test covering speaking, writing, reading and listening
Scores are reported on a 10-90 scale, based on the Global Scale of English
Results typically arrive within about 2 business days
Scores stay valid for 2 years, and you send them to schools free
US nursing boards and HRSA also recognize PTE Academic for professional registration
What PTE Academic is
PTE Academic is a fully computer-based English proficiency test built on the Global Scale of English, scored from 10 to 90. You take the whole test in a single sitting of roughly 2 hours, covering speaking and writing together, then reading, then listening, all on a computer at a test center. Pearson's official PTE Academic page confirms this scale and format as of 2026.
Because every section runs on a computer, your speaking responses are scored by automated speech recognition rather than a human examiner in the room, which some students find less stressful than a face-to-face speaking test.
Which US schools accept it
Pearson states that PTE Academic is widely accepted across US universities, and specifically that all Ivy League universities accept PTE Academic scores. Acceptance has grown in recent years, but PTE is not yet listed everywhere TOEFL and IELTS appear, especially at smaller and less internationally focused schools.
Check your target program's English proficiency requirement page directly, since a school can accept PTE for undergraduate admission while a specific graduate department still asks for TOEFL or IELTS only. Do not assume acceptance based on the university's general reputation.
How PTE scores compare to TOEFL and IELTS
Pearson and score-conversion guides publish approximate equivalence tables between PTE, TOEFL and IELTS, but exact conversion figures shift as test providers update their concordance research. Rather than rely on a fixed number here, use the official comparison tool on Pearson's website when you decide whether your PTE score meets a school's stated TOEFL or IELTS minimum, and confirm directly with the admissions office which score they treat as equivalent.
What the test covers section by section
Test format documentation breaks the exam into three parts. The Speaking and Writing section includes tasks like reading a text aloud, repeating a sentence you hear, describing an image, retelling a short lecture, answering short questions and writing an essay. The Reading section uses fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice and paragraph-reordering questions. The Listening section includes summarizing spoken text, multiple-choice questions, fill-in-the-blank, identifying words that do not match the audio and a dictation task where you type exactly what you hear.
Because several question types score more than one skill at once, for example writing what you hear also tests your listening, your overall score reflects a mix rather than four separate skill scores.
Before you book a test date
Since you type and speak into a microphone rather than write by hand or speak to a person, practice with the on-screen interface before test day if your target test center offers a tutorial. Comfort with typing at a normal pace matters for the Writing tasks, and clear, steady speech into a microphone matters more than volume for the Speaking tasks.
Book early enough that a retake stays possible before your application deadline. If your first score comes in below what your target program needs, you have time to identify weak sections from your score breakdown and retest rather than accept a lower offer or delay your application.
Register for plain PTE Academic when your goal is US university admission, since PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home serve different purposes and are not the product university admissions pages usually reference.
