The two conditions work independently. Keeping a strong GPA does not protect you from losing the renewal by dropping below full time status, and staying enrolled full time does not protect you from losing it by finishing the year with a low average. Read your award letter for the exact GPA number and the exact course load number, since the two rarely match in difficulty.
GPA thresholds differ by scale and by school
Canadian universities use different GPA scales, so a number that sounds high at one school translates to something else at another. At Carleton University, renewable entrance scholarships for four year honours degrees need an annual GPA of 10.0, equal to A- standing on Carleton's 12-point scale . Its Engineering-specific Ronald and Deanna Biggs Scholarship uses the same 10.0 threshold, renewable for three years.
McGill sets a probationary sessional GPA of 3.50 for first year students on at least 27 graded credits, then raises the bar to a combined sessional GPA of 3.70 for second year and beyond , on McGill's 4.0 scale. Pre-med, pre-dent, and law students face a tougher standard: Dean's Honour List standing, meaning the top 10% of their class.
Toronto Metropolitan University ties the renewal amount itself to your CGPA band . For students admitted in 2023 or later, a CGPA of 4.15 or higher keeps the full $3,000 annual award, 4.01-4.14 drops it to $1,500, and 3.85-4.00 drops it to $750. Falling under 3.85 forfeits the award for that year.
Course load conditions run alongside the GPA
Most schools require close to full time enrollment in both fall and winter terms to keep a renewable scholarship active, separate from your GPA. TMU sets this at an 80% course load, meaning 4 or more billing units, in each of the fall and winter terms. University of Guelph-Humber requires a full time course load in the same two terms before the year of renewal . McGill requires 27 graded credits across fall and winter, or 14 credits if you register in a single term only, and it does not count courses you take on a satisfactory or unsatisfactory basis toward that total.
A reduced course load for documented medical or accessibility reasons, a co-op work term, or an exchange term abroad all interact with these rules differently at each school. Contact your awards office before you register for a lighter term if you rely on a renewable scholarship, rather than assuming an exception applies automatically.
What a slip below threshold actually costs you
The consequence of missing the bar is not identical everywhere. At TMU, falling below your CGPA band forfeits all or part of the award for that year, but you regain eligibility the following year if your CGPA climbs back into the required band while meeting all other criteria. The original renewal window (commonly three or four years) does not extend to make up for a lapse year, so a missed year is gone for good even after reinstatement.
At McGill, a below-threshold year that comes with documented extenuating circumstances, such as illness or family care responsibilities, goes to the Scholarships Review Subcommittee for review. Without documented circumstances, the scholarship simply does not renew for that year.
