Renewing a Provincial Driver's Licence From Abroad Before It Expires Mid-Degree

TL;DR

Renew your provincial driver's licence before you leave Canada if your degree abroad runs longer than the licence's remaining validity. Ontario and BC allow renewal from outside the province under specific conditions, but neither makes it simple once the licence has already expired.

  • ⏱️ Check your licence expiry date against your full study timeline before departure, not after you land.

  • 🏠 Ontario lets you request a temporary licence by mail from outside the province if yours expires while you are away.

  • British Columbia's ICBC renewal is an in-person process, so plan around trips home or expect a lapse.

  • Alberta processes vary by registry agent, so call ahead rather than assuming an online option exists.

  • A lapsed licence complicates renting a car, some ID checks, and driving when you return.

Renewing a Provincial Driver's Licence From Abroad Before It Expires Mid-Degree

Check the math before you leave

Compare your licence's expiry date against the full length of your degree abroad, including any placement or work term that keeps you away longer than planned. A licence that expires partway through a multi-year program needs a plan in place before you board your flight, since provincial renewal from overseas is not always straightforward.

If your licence expires within your first year abroad, renew before departure even if it means renewing a little early. Every province lets you renew ahead of the expiry date while you are still physically in the country, which is the simplest path.

Ontario: renewal from outside the province is possible

Ontario allows renewal up to 180 days before expiry in person or up to 90 days before expiry online, according to ServiceOntario's guidance on renewing a licence outside Ontario . If your licence has already expired while you are away, you can request a temporary licence valid for up to six months, as long as it has not been expired for more than one year and is not cancelled or suspended.

You submit this request online through the Special Enquiry Unit, or by mail or fax with a signed letter that includes your licence number, the reason for your absence, your out-of-province address, and a copy of your photo card, sent to the Ministry of Transportation in Toronto. Novice licence holders on a G1, G2, or M2 cannot get a temporary licence by mail and must reapply in person once they return. Drivers over 80 also cannot complete a renewal session from outside Ontario. If your absence runs longer than six months, contact ServiceOntario directly to work out your options before the temporary licence itself expires.

British Columbia: plan for an in-person visit

ICBC's standard renewal process requires bringing two pieces of accepted ID to a driver licensing office, up to six months before your licence expires, according to ICBC's renewal guidance . The published process does not include an online or mail option for someone living outside Canada, so if you cannot make a trip home before your licence expires, contact ICBC directly at their driver licensing line to ask about your specific situation rather than assuming a remote option exists.

If you plan a visit home during your degree, that trip is the easiest window to renew in person. Time it a few months before expiry so you are not stuck without a valid licence if the visit gets delayed.

Alberta and other provinces: call ahead

Alberta's driver's licence system runs through independent registry agents rather than a single provincial counter, and processes for renewing while abroad differ enough by agent and by situation that a general answer is not reliable. Call your regular registry agent or Alberta's general inquiry line before you leave and ask specifically what happens if your licence expires while you are studying outside Canada. Other provinces not covered here should be checked the same way, directly with the provincial licensing authority, since rules and renewal windows are not standardized across the country.

If your licence lapses anyway

A lapsed Canadian licence still works as photo ID in most everyday situations, but it stops working as a valid licence to drive, complicates renting a car if you travel, and can slow down a driving-record based application when you return, such as for a G2 upgrade tied to accumulated experience. If yours lapses while abroad, contact your provincial licensing authority as soon as you can rather than waiting until you land back in Canada, since some provinces cap how long a licence can stay expired before you need to start over with a road test.
