Why courses outlast visas
A study visa gets issued for a fixed period matched to your original Confirmation of Enrolment or Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. Repeating a failed subject, changing course, adding a semester, or progressing from a foundation or diploma program into a full degree all push your finish date past what your visa covers. None of these situations resolve themselves automatically. Each destination requires you to act before the current visa or permit expires, and the process differs by country.

Australia: applying for a new subclass 500
Australia does not extend a subclass 500 visa. You apply for an entirely new student visa before the current one expires, through ImmiAccount. Your provider issues an updated Confirmation of Enrolment reflecting the new course end date, and you need current evidence of financial capacity, Overseas Student Health Cover for the new period, and to meet the Genuine Student requirement again on the new application. Lodging the new application before the current visa expires generally keeps you on a bridging visa with similar conditions while the department processes the case. Let the visa lapse first and you become an unlawful non-citizen with no bridging visa protection, exposed to the detention and re-entry ban rules that apply to any overstayer.
UK: extending a Student visa from inside the country
Apply to extend a Student visa from 3 months before it expires. To apply from inside the UK, the new course must start within 28 days of the current visa expiring, and you need a new Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from the new or continuing course provider. When the gap between the old visa expiring and the new course starting runs longer than 28 days, you must leave the UK and apply for a fresh visa from outside the country instead of extending in-country. Standard processing runs several weeks, and a priority service brings the decision down to 5 working days for an extra fee.
Canada: extending or changing a study permit
Apply to extend a study permit through IRCC Guide 5552 before the current permit expires. File before expiry and remain in Canada, and you keep maintained status, continuing to study under the existing conditions while the extension is processed. Under the provincial attestation letter policy effective January 2024 , students extending their permit at the same institution and study level generally skip the Provincial Attestation Letter requirement. A PAL becomes necessary when switching to a different institution or moving up to a different level of study, such as from a diploma into a bachelor's program. Let a permit lapse before applying, and restoration of status is possible only within a limited window after expiry, without permission to study or work during the gap, and for an added restoration fee.
What happens if you file late
Filing after your visa or permit expires removes the protections built into each system. In Australia you lose bridging visa cover and become an unlawful non-citizen immediately. In the UK, filing after expiry, or planning a new course start date more than 28 days after expiry, forces an out-of-country application instead of an in-country extension, adding cost and delay. In Canada, a lapsed permit before you apply for restoration means you stop studying or working legally until IRCC approves the restoration, and repeated late filings raise questions in future visa assessments about your compliance record.
