Renewing a South Africa Study Permit While Already Enrolled

Start the clock at 60 days before expiry

A South African study permit does not renew itself, and your university does not extend it for you. Your renewal application has to reach the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) before your current permit expires. DHA recommends submitting a complete application at least 60 days ahead of that date, since processing backlogs happen often and extra documents get requested mid review.

Keep proof of submission, the VFS receipt and reference number, with you at all times once you file. If your permit expires while your renewal sits pending, that receipt shows immigration officers and campus security that you remain in the country lawfully.

Applications go through VFS Global, not a DHA counter

DHA outsourced visa intake to VFS Global , which now processes all study permit renewal applications. DHA stays the sole decision maker, but you submit documents, pay fees, and book your appointment through the VFS online portal, not at a Home Affairs branch. Why renewal differs from a first time application

A renewal assumes continuous, valid enrollment, so your proof of registration matters more here than in a first application. A gap in your academic record, a deferred semester, or a suspension breaks that continuity, and DHA may ask for an explanation letter from your institution before approving the extension. Apply for renewal only once your institution confirms your registration for the coming period, since an incomplete registration record delays the whole file.

Documents your file needs

Your university's international office collects and checks most of these before you submit:

• Original passport, valid well beyond your intended study period

• A police clearance certificate

• A radiological report and a medical certificate from an approved practitioner

• Proof of current registration at your institution

• A letter from your faculty, school or department stating how long the extension should run

• Proof of paid tuition fees

• Proof of available funds for living costs

• Proof of South African based medical aid cover

Check with your institution's international student office before filing. University of Cape Town and Wits University both run pre submission checks that flag a missing document before VFS rejects your file outright.

Fees

Renewal costs come in two parts: a Department of Home Affairs fee, and a separate VFS Global service fee for handling your application. Budget for both, and pay through the channels VFS specifies during online booking, since visa application centres do not accept cash for every fee type.

What happens if you let it lapse

Studying on an expired permit puts you in the country unlawfully. South African immigration law treats overstaying without an active renewal application on file as grounds to declare you an undesirable person, a status that blocks a new visa for a set period, even on a later return visit. Universities check permit status at registration each year too, so a lapsed permit stops re enrollment until it gets resolved.

DHA has, during past backlog periods, issued temporary concessions extending the validity of visas awaiting decisions. These concessions come and go, so confirm with your international office or the DHA website whether one applies to your situation rather than assuming an expired permit still counts as valid on its own.

After you submit

VFS gives you a tracking reference to check application status online instead of calling the office. Processing times stretch during peak intake periods around the start of each academic year, so avoid booking travel that depends on your new permit arriving by a fixed date. Tell your international office immediately if your circumstances change while the renewal sits pending, such as switching degree programs or extending your expected graduation date, so they update the file with DHA.
