Universities in The Republic of the Congo: Admission, Costs and How to Apply

Where you can study

Marien Ngouabi University (Université Marien Ngouabi, UMNG) in Brazzaville is the Republic of the Congo's only public university. It groups faculties covering law, economics, health sciences, science and technology, and letters and humanities, plus specialized schools that train teachers and public administrators. If you want a public, state-funded degree, UMNG is your starting point.

Alongside UMNG, the state had approved at least 13 private higher education institutions as of a 2018 accreditation round, most based in Brazzaville and the economic hub of Pointe-Noire, with more added in later accreditation sessions since, according to the Ministry of Higher Education (adiac-congo.com ). Confirm the current count with the Ministry of Higher Education before relying on it. Université Libre du Congo (ULC), founded in Brazzaville in 1995, and ESGAE, founded in 1993, are among the longest-running private schools. In Pointe-Noire you can also choose institutions such as Université de Loango, which teaches law, management and commerce, plus smaller schools focused on science, technology and management. A state-approved private institution's diplomas carry the same official recognition as a public one, so confirm approval status before you enroll anywhere.

Entry requirements and the LMD system

Congolese higher education runs on the LMD system (Licence-Master-Doctorat), the structure used across most of Francophone Africa. You need the baccalauréat to enter a licence program, then progress through licence (3 years), master (2 years) and doctorate. Teaching happens in French at every public and private institution.

Two admission routes exist. For most faculties you get in on the strength of your diploma: you hold the required baccalauréat series for the program and that qualifies you for a place. The exception is the Faculty of Health Sciences, where every applicant sits a competitive entrance exam, because places for medicine and related programs are limited relative to demand (kamerpower.com ).

Specialized schools inside UMNG

Beyond its general faculties, UMNG runs specialized schools with their own entry rules, including a teacher-training school (École Normale Supérieure) and a school for public administration and magistracy (École Nationale d'Administration et de Magistrature). These schools often set their own quotas and, in some cases, their own entrance exams, separate from the general faculty admission route. Check with the specific school for its current entry process rather than assuming the general faculty rules apply.

How to register

Registration at UMNG starts with a pre-registration form, which you collect and fill in at the Enrollment and Examinations Service of the faculty or school you are joining. Your course director and the service head both sign the form. You then take the signed form, plus your payment receipt, to the university's central Enrollment and Examinations Directorate to complete administrative registration and pay your fees (kamerpower.com ).

Timing matters. First-year (L1) registration typically opens in September and closes in late November. If you are already enrolled and moving to the next year, re-registration opens earlier, from July. Missing the window means waiting for the next academic year, so start your paperwork as soon as your results come out. Keep your baccalauréat certificate, birth certificate and identity documents ready, since every step of registration asks for them.

What it costs

Public tuition at UMNG stays low by design. Choosing where to apply

If your priority is low cost and a wide choice of faculties, UMNG is the default choice for most Congolese students. If you want a specific professional track, such as management, marketing or a technical specialty UMNG does not offer, a state-approved private institution in Brazzaville or Pointe-Noire can fill that gap. Whichever route you take, confirm the institution's approval status with the Ministry of Higher Education before you pay any fees. Only diplomas from approved institutions carry full recognition for jobs and further study.
