Rhodes Scholarship for Canadians at Oxford: Eligibility and Timeline

By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 19, 2026 • Scholarships & Funding, Canadians Studying Abroad

TL;DR

The Rhodes Scholarship funds a full degree at Oxford: university and college fees, a stipend of £20,400 a year (£1,700 a month) for 2025-26, application and visa costs, and two economy flights. Canadians apply through a Canadian selection process, not directly to Oxford.

  • 🎓 Covers Oxford fees plus a monthly stipend, application fees and travel.

  • DPhil (PhD) scholars get up to three years of funded fees and stipend.

  • Canadian applicants go through Rhodes Scholarships Canada's own selection committees, not a generic global pool.

  • You need a confirmed or planned Oxford course application alongside your Rhodes application.

  • The stipend does not stretch to cover a partner or dependents.

What the scholarship actually pays for

The Rhodes Scholarship covers your Oxford university and college fees in full, so you are not paying the tuition figures international students normally see for Oxford courses. On top of fees, scholars get a stipend of £20,400 a year, paid monthly at roughly £1,700, for the 2025-26 award year. The scholarship also covers your Oxford application fee, visa costs, the Immigration Health Surcharge, two economy class flights to and from the UK, and a settling-in allowance when you arrive.

None of this stretches to cover a partner or dependents, so factor that in if you plan to bring family. Full current terms sit on the Rhodes Trust's own scholarship page .

How long it runs

Scholars pursuing a DPhil (Oxford's name for a PhD) get up to three years of funded fees and stipend.

Scholars taking a one or two-year master's course get funding matched to that course length instead. Check your own program's exact funded length against the Rhodes Trust's Conditions of Tenure document once you have a course in mind, since it varies by degree type.

How the Canadian process differs from a direct Oxford application

You do not apply to the Rhodes Scholarship the way you apply to an Oxford course. Canadian candidates go through Rhodes Scholarships Canada, which runs its own selection committees and interview process separate from other national and regional constituencies around the world. That means your application, references and interview happen through the Canadian process even though the degree itself takes place at Oxford.

Confirm your current eligibility, including any age or academic-standing requirements, directly through the Rhodes Trust's apply section , since criteria are reviewed and can shift between application cycles.

Building your timeline

Start planning at least a year before you intend to begin at Oxford.

The Rhodes selection cycle runs roughly a year ahead of the October start date it funds, with a national application stage followed by shortlisting and in-person or virtual interviews before final decisions. Because you are applying to Oxford and to the scholarship in parallel, work out which Oxford course and college you want early enough to have a genuine course plan ready when your Rhodes application and references are due.

Strengthening your application

  • Build a clear academic record with strong references who can speak to sustained achievement, not just grades in one term.

  • Show evidence of leadership and service outside the classroom, since Rhodes selection weighs character and contribution alongside academics.

  • Pick an Oxford course and college that genuinely fits your goals, since panels look for a real academic plan, not just an application for its own sake.

  • Contact Rhodes Scholarships Canada directly with eligibility questions specific to your province or territory rather than relying on general Rhodes Trust pages meant for a global audience.
