TL;DR

British Columbia funds students through StudentAid BC grants, the BC Excellence Scholarship, and institutional and community awards. Most awards need no separate application beyond your regular financial aid or admission file.

  • 💵 BC Access Grant: up to $4,000 a year for programs under two years, up to $1,000 a year for longer programs, based on family income.

  • 🎓 BC Excellence Scholarship: $5,000 tuition voucher for 55 Grade 12 students a year, nominated through your school.

  • 📩 No separate BC Access Grant application: your StudentAid BC funding application assesses it automatically.

  • 🏠 Institutional entrance and in-course scholarships come from each university's awards office, not the province.

Scholarships and Bursaries in British Columbia: What Exists and Who Qualifies

How BC funds students beyond loans

Money for BC students studying in Canada comes from three layers: provincial grants tied to your StudentAid BC application, merit-based scholarships from the Ministry of Education and Child Care or your institution, and need-based bursaries from your school, community foundations, and employers. Grants and bursaries do not need repayment. Scholarships reward grades, leadership, or a specific talent. Most of this funding stacks with federal Canada Student Grants rather than replacing them.

BC Access Grant

The BC Access Grant is non-repayable and layers into your annual StudentAid BC assessment. If your program runs less than two years, the grant provides up to $4,000 for an eight-month school year. If your program runs two years or longer, the maximum drops to $1,000 for the same period.

Your family income sets the amount: the lowest-income families receive the full grant, middle-income families receive a partial amount, and the grant phases out at higher incomes. You do not fill out a separate form. Submit your regular StudentAid BC application and the system checks your eligibility automatically, according to StudentAid BC .

Program lengthMaximum BC Access Grant per school year
Under 2 years$4,000
2 years or longer$1,000

A parallel BC Access Grant for Students with Disabilities exists for students who qualify for permanent disability status through StudentAid BC. Check your eligibility and the current amount on the StudentAid BC grants and scholarships page before you apply.

BC Scholarship Society and youth-in-care funding

The B.C. Scholarship Society administers further provincial award streams alongside StudentAid BC, including awards aimed at Indigenous students, students transferring between BC institutions, and BC students heading into international study. Two more programs target students who grew up in government care: the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program waives tuition at BC's public post-secondary institutions for eligible former youth in care, and the Youth Futures Education Fund adds non-repayable funding toward tuition, books, and living costs for the same group. Check current eligibility rules and application steps for each on the StudentAid BC grants and scholarships page before you assume you do or do not qualify.

BC Excellence Scholarship

The BC Excellence Scholarship is a $5,000 tuition voucher awarded to 55 Grade 12 graduates across the province each year.

The Ministry of Education and Child Care runs the program, and it rewards leadership and community service alongside academic standing, not grades alone. Your high school nominates you: talk to your counsellor about the timeline, since nominations require two reference letters and close in February for the following intake, per the Provincial Scholarships Program . You have five years from the award date to redeem the voucher against tuition at a designated BC institution, and the expiry date printed on the voucher cannot be extended.

Institutional entrance and in-course scholarships

Every BC public university and college runs its own scholarship budget separate from the province. Entrance scholarships at UBC, SFU, UVic, and other institutions typically use your admission average, with the highest averages triggering automatic awards and no extra application.

In-course scholarships reward your grades once you are enrolled, and many departments add smaller awards tied to a major, a research area, or athletics. Your institution's awards or financial aid office publishes exact thresholds and deadlines each year: check that page directly rather than relying on a forum estimate, since minimums shift between admission cycles.

Community, employer, and national awards

BC students also compete for national programs open to any Canadian high school graduate, including the Loran Award and the Schulich Leader Scholarships for STEM applicants. Local Rotary clubs, credit unions, and community foundations across BC run smaller bursaries, often restricted to a specific city or school district. If a parent works for a large employer or union, ask their HR department about employee-dependant scholarship funds, since many go unclaimed for lack of applicants.

Applying without missing a deadline

Start early in Grade 12: BC Excellence nominations and most entrance scholarship applications close months before your StudentAid BC application opens for the fall term. Set separate reminders for your school's nomination deadline, your institution's entrance scholarship deadline, and your StudentAid BC application date, since missing one does not extend another. Renewable in-course scholarships usually require a minimum grade point average each year, so check the renewal terms before you count on the money for a second year.

Build a simple tracking sheet with each award's name, deadline, required documents, and renewal condition, then update it every time you find a new one. Search your institution's award database by faculty and program in addition to the general list, since department-specific funding for co-op terms, research assistantships, or a specific major draws fewer applicants than the large university-wide entrance awards. Avoid any site that charges a fee to match you with scholarships or that asks for payment information before showing results, since legitimate BC and national awards never require payment to apply.
