Part of the guide Scholarships and Funding in the USA by Nationality
Full scholarships for Bangladeshi students in the USA are rare, but Fulbright funding, university aid, and flexible Bangladesh Bank rules for sending tuition money make a funded plan realistic if you build it before you apply.
🎓 The Fulbright Foreign Student Program funds a full master's degree for a small, competitive group of Bangladeshi applicants each year.
💵 Many US universities offer need-based or merit aid to international applicants, check each school's own policy before you apply.
🏠 Bangladesh Bank updated its rules in August 2026 to let you pay tuition by international card without it counting against your annual travel foreign exchange quota.
💵 Living costs sent from Bangladesh are capped at $2,000 a month under current foreign exchange rules.
1. Fulbright Foreign Student Program
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program, funded by the US Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education, pays for a master's degree in the US for a competitive group of Bangladeshi applicants each year. The US Embassy in Dhaka opens the call for applications annually, most recently for the 2026-27 cycle. The award covers tuition, a living stipend, airfare, and health insurance, and the process runs through the embassy rather than through individual universities. Applicants typically apply directly to the program before they hold a US university admission offer, since Fulbright places successful candidates into a matching university once selected, rather than requiring you to secure admission first.
2. EducationUSA advising
The American Center in Dhaka does not give money directly, but it runs free seminars on building a list of schools that includes ones known to fund international students well. Advisers there see application and aid outcomes across many Bangladeshi students each year and know which programs realistically fund your profile.
3. University need-based and merit aid
Some US universities admit international students need-blind and meet full demonstrated need. Others offer merit scholarships tied to test scores or academic record, and many offer nothing beyond a small tuition discount. Check a school's international aid policy on its financial aid office page before you apply, aid availability drives your real cost far more than the sticker tuition price does.
4. Graduate assistantships
PhD programs and many funded master's programs in STEM fields offer teaching or research assistantships that cover tuition and pay a monthly stipend in exchange for a set number of work hours a week. Departments offer these directly, separate from the financial aid office, so ask about assistantship availability during your admission conversations with the department itself.
5. Bangladesh government and university sponsorship
Some Bangladeshi public universities and government ministries fund faculty and staff to pursue graduate study abroad under bond agreements that require return service afterward. If you work for a government body or a university, ask your HR or academic affairs office about existing study-abroad sponsorship schemes before you plan to self-fund.
6. Employer sponsorship
If you work at a multinational company or NGO with a US office, ask whether it sponsors staff for a part-time or executive US degree. This route is uncommon for full-time undergraduate study but realistic for working professionals pursuing an MBA or a specialized master's.
7. Watch for scholarship scams
Bangladeshi students report offers from unknown "foundations" promising guaranteed US scholarships in exchange for an upfront processing fee. Genuine scholarships, Fulbright included, never ask you to pay to be considered. Verify any scholarship through the funding organization's own official website or through EducationUSA before you send money or personal documents to anyone.
8. Moving money under Bangladesh Bank rules
Bangladesh Bank updated its foreign exchange rules in August 2026 to make paying for overseas education easier. You now pay tuition directly by international debit, prepaid, or credit card for the actual amount shown on your school's demand note, and this payment does not count against your annual personal travel quota (The Daily Star ). Living expenses are capped separately at $2,000 a month, and the general annual travel quota stays at $12,000 per adult, half that for a minor, for costs outside tuition and approved living expenses.
9. Education loans
Bangladeshi banks offer student loans against collateral or a guarantor, and some international lenders underwrite loans for students admitted to specific partner universities without a Bangladeshi cosigner. Compare the total repayment cost, not only the headline interest rate, and confirm a lender is properly licensed before sending any documents or fees.
What a realistic funding mix looks like
Most funded Bangladeshi students combine partial university aid with a family contribution, a graduate assistantship, or a loan, rather than winning one source that covers everything. Layering two or three of the routes above into a single plan gets you closer to full funding than searching for one program that pays for the whole degree.
Budget for costs that arrive before any funding does
Even a fully funded offer rarely covers the fees you pay during the application and visa process itself. Plan for the $350 SEVIS fee, the $185 visa fee, and the $250 visa integrity fee out of your own funds, since scholarship disbursements typically start only after you enroll, not before you travel. The visa integrity fee took effect on October 1, 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, applies to F-1 and other nonimmigrant visas, and is charged when your visa is issued rather than when you apply, with no waiver or reduction available (University of Illinois Chicago OIS ). That puts the government total at $785 before you buy a ticket. Set this money aside early so a funding delay never blocks your visa appointment.
Build your funding plan before you apply
Apply to a mix of schools that fund international students generously and schools you afford without aid. Waiting until after admission to search for money narrows your options, most large scholarships and university aid programs carry their own deadlines that fall before or alongside the admission deadline itself.
