Scholarships for Cameroonian Students at US Universities

Most funding comes from the US side, not Cameroon

Publicly available information does not show a large national scholarship fund in Cameroon for study in the United States. Almost every dollar of funding open to you comes from a US government program, a US university, or an international foundation. Build your funding plan around these three sources instead of waiting on a home-country award.

Start early. Many of the awards below close 8 to 12 months before the US academic year begins, and your college application and your scholarship application often run on separate timelines.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is the largest fully funded award open to Cameroonians for graduate-level study in the United States. It pays tuition, airfare, a monthly living stipend, and health insurance for a masters or PhD program, and it does not require a US university offer before you apply.

Apply through the Fulbright program listing for Cameroon or through your nearest EducationUSA advising center. Competition is heavy. A statement of purpose that ties your study plan to a specific problem in Cameroon carries more weight than test scores alone.

PhD funding usually comes from the university itself

Most PhD programs in the United States fund admitted students directly through a graduate assistantship, which pays a stipend and waives tuition in exchange for teaching or research work. This funding model covers science, engineering, and many social science PhD programs, and it applies to Cameroonian applicants on the same terms as any other international applicant.

Ask about funding before you apply. A PhD program's website usually states whether it admits unfunded students at all, and individual faculty pages often list open, funded positions in a specific lab or research group.

Need-blind US colleges that cover full need

A small group of private US colleges review undergraduate applications from international students without looking at ability to pay, then cover 100 percent of demonstrated financial need for every admitted student, including Cameroonians. This is the single biggest source of full-ride funding for undergraduate study.

These schools rank among the most selective in the country, so admission is competitive on its own. Apply to a wider list that includes schools with large merit scholarships too, so you have more than one funding path.

Named merit scholarships worth checking

Several US public universities publish standing international merit scholarship tables tied to your GPA and standardized test score, renewable each year you keep your grades up. The University of Alabama, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Tulsa are three schools long known for large, transparent international merit awards. Search for the international admissions and scholarships page on any school on your list, since most now post their award table online.

Read the renewal terms closely. Most of these awards set a minimum GPA for each year, and a grade drop below that line reduces or ends the award for your remaining years.

Departmental scholarships and assistantships

Outside named national awards, many US universities offer merit scholarships to international students based on grades, test scores, and essays, separate from financial need. Graduate applicants should check individual departments too, since a masters or PhD program often funds students through a teaching assistantship or research assistantship in exchange for classroom or lab work. Ask your target department directly whether assistantship funding is open to incoming Cameroonian students.

AAUW International Fellowships

The American Association of University Women funds international women for full-time graduate or postdoctoral study in the United States through its International Fellowships program. Cameroonian women pursuing a masters, PhD, or postdoctoral research project apply directly, and the award does not require a specific field of study.

Ask your employer or professional body

If you already work in Cameroon, ask your employer about study leave or a tuition sponsorship tied to a return-to-work agreement. Professional bodies in fields such as engineering, medicine, and accounting sometimes fund continuing members for advanced study abroad. This route rarely appears on a general scholarship list, so raise it directly with your employer or association.

US universities and many scholarship committees require a foreign credential evaluation before they assess a Cameroonian Baccalaureat, GCE A-Level, Licence, or Maitrise transcript. Build a funding timeline, not a single application

Work your Fulbright or AAUW application, your target universities, and any merit or department funding on parallel tracks, since each has its own deadline and its own form. Track every deadline in one place, and confirm whether an award requires a university acceptance in hand first or accepts applicants before they have one.

Watch for scholarship scams

Anyone who asks for money to release a scholarship, or who promises guaranteed admission and funding for a fee, is running a scam. Legitimate awards never require an upfront payment from the applicant. Verify a scholarship offer through the official university or program website before you send money or personal documents.
