The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) runs a federal government undergraduate scholarship open to Nigerian students with disabilities enrolled in public tertiary institutions. It requires a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 and pays tuition directly to the student's institution rather than to the student, which removes the risk of funds going toward something else. Applications typically require a formal application letter and supporting documents. NELFUND: loans for tuition and upkeep, with accessibility improvements underway
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) was signed into law in April 2024 and offers two forms of support: an institution-based loan that pays tuition directly to your school, and an upkeep loan paid to you as a maintenance allowance. By early February 2025, NELFUND reported disbursing about N161.97 billion in total, roughly N89.94 billion in tuition paid directly to 263 tertiary institutions and about N72.03 billion in upkeep allowances, reaching 864,798 students. NELFUND's managing director announced in March 2025 that the fund is developing software with NCPWD to make the loan application process easier for students with visual impairments, so check the NELFUND portal for updated accessibility tools before you apply.
Lagos State's Special Scholarship for Inclusion Awards
If you study at a Lagos State tertiary institution, the Lagos State Scholarship Board runs a Special Scholarship for Inclusion Awards specifically for students living with disabilities and other vulnerable groups at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Technology (LASUTECH), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET) and Lagos State Cooperative College. Apply through the Lagos State Scholarship Board rather than through your faculty.
Check for a disability support unit at your own university
Some Nigerian universities run dedicated disability support units that handle fee waivers, accessible learning materials and exam accommodations separately from national scholarship schemes. LASU's Disability Support Unit has been recognized publicly by the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) for the practical support it provides students. Ask your dean of student affairs whether your institution has an equivalent unit, since this route often moves faster than a national application.
Use advocacy groups to find opportunities and support your case
The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) is not itself a scholarship fund, but its state chapters track available opportunities, help members prepare applications and advocate when an institution fails to provide reasonable accommodation.
