How University Admission Works in Senegal

The baccalauréat opens the door

To start university in Senegal you need the baccalauréat, the exam that ends secondary school. Your series, L for literary tracks, S for science, T for technical, among others, and your grade average shape which programs you can realistically get into. Public universities do not run separate entrance exams for most first-year programs. Admission depends on your bac result and how you rank your course choices.

Campusen: the national orientation platform

Once bac results are out, you apply through Campusen , the platform the Direction Générale de l'Enseignement Supérieur (DGES) uses to place new bac holders into public higher education. You do not apply to one university at a time. You rank up to 18 course choices spread across Senegal's 8 public universities: Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (UCAD), Université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis (UGB), Université Assane Seck de Ziguinchor (UASZ), Université Iba Der Thiam de Thiès (UIDT), Université Alioune Diop de Bambey (UAD), Université Numérique Cheikh Hamidou Kane, Université du Sine Saloum El Hadji Ibrahima Niasse (USSEIN), and Université Amadou Mahtar Mbow (UAM) in Diamniadio.

How the ranking works

You list your choices in order of preference and validate the list before the deadline. The system places you into the highest-ranked choice where your bac series, average, and the program's available seats line up. Order matters: a program ranked first only admits you if you meet its requirements, so mix competitive choices with safer ones.

ISEP: the professional, shorter track

For a shorter, hands-on qualification, rank up to 18 choices across the Instituts Supérieurs d'Enseignement Professionnel (ISEP), technical institutes in Thiès, Diamniadio, Bignona, Matam, Richard-Toll, and Mbacké. ISEP programs lead to a professional diploma, usually a licence professionnelle, in two to three years, and take a separate ranking list from universities, so you apply to both tracks in the same cycle.

Timeline and the replacement round

Campusen opens shortly after bac results each year and runs on a tight schedule, often just two to three weeks for the main preinscription window. Candidates who miss the first cycle, get no placement, or want to contest a result use the session de remplacement (replacement round) that follows. Watch the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI) site and Campusen for exact dates each year, since they shift from one bac session to the next.

What registration actually costs

Teaching itself is state-subsidized at public universities, so you are not billed full tuition. What you pay is a registration fee: at UCAD this is about 25,000 FCFA plus a 500 FCFA transfer fee for the 2024/25 academic year, paid through the InTouch mobile money network rather than in cash at a counter, according to UCAD's registration page . Other public universities charge similar registration fees. Check each university's admission page for its exact figure before the deadline.

If you do not get the placement you want

A weak placement, or no placement, does not end your options. Enter the replacement round, retake the bac to improve your series or average for the next cycle, or apply directly to a private university or school. Most private institutions run their own admission process outside Campusen and accept applications on their own calendar. Confirm any private institution is accredited by ANAQ-Sup before committing money to it.

Practical tips for the Campusen cycle

• Keep your bac certificate number and personal details ready before the platform opens. Delays in registering cost you a preferred slot.

• Rank a realistic spread of choices. Filling all 18 slots with the most competitive programs at UCAD leaves no fallback.

• Check each university's department page for program-level requirements beyond the general bac series rule.

• If you also try for an ISEP place, remember it is a separate list of choices from the university list.
