Service Academies as a Career Path

West Point, the Naval Academy, and the Air Force Academy offer a full 4-year degree with no tuition, room, or board charge, in exchange for a minimum 5-year active duty commitment plus 3 years in the reserves after graduation. Admission requires a nomination, usually from a member of Congress, on top of the same academic and fitness standards as a competitive college application.

What a service academy costs, and what it pays
The United States has 5 federal service academies: the US Military Academy at West Point , the Naval Academy at Annapolis, the Air Force Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy. All 5 offer a 4-year bachelor's degree with tuition, room, and board fully covered in exchange for a service commitment after graduation.
Instead of paying tuition, you receive a monthly stipend as a cadet or midshipman, commonly cited around $1,000 a month before deductions for uniforms, books, and other required items. The stipend is not spending money in the way a part-time job paycheck would be, since the academy withholds set costs directly from it.
Getting in: nominations and standards
Admission to West Point, the Naval Academy, and the Air Force Academy requires a nomination, most often from your US Senator or Representative, in addition to meeting academic, physical fitness, and medical standards. You typically request nominations the fall of your senior year of high school, alongside your application to the academy itself. The Coast Guard Academy does not require a congressional nomination and admits through a standard competitive process instead.
Academic standards are competitive with selective colleges, and physical fitness testing is part of the application at every academy. Start the nomination and application process early in your junior year if a service academy is on your list, since nomination deadlines fall months before the academy's own application deadline.
The service commitment after graduation
Graduates of West Point and the Air Force Academy commit to at least 5 years of active duty followed by 3 years in the reserves. Naval Academy graduates commit to a minimum of 5 years of active duty as well, with the exact obligation and branch, Navy or Marine Corps, decided during junior year based on class ranking and career field selection.
Career fields with expensive specialized training carry longer commitments. Air Force pilots take on a 10-year active-duty commitment after finishing flight training, and Navy and Marine Corps aviators face similarly extended obligations. Nuclear-qualified Navy officers also serve longer commitments tied to the length and cost of their training pipeline.
Is a service academy the right path
A service academy makes sense if you want a structured path into a military officer career and are comfortable with a multi-year active duty commitment decided largely by the needs of the military rather than personal preference. If you want a shorter commitment or more choice over your first job after graduation, an ROTC scholarship at a civilian college, which typically carries a similar but sometimes shorter obligation, fits better for many students. Compare both paths against your career goals before you commit to either application process.
