Polytechnic to University Articulation: Advanced Standing and Credit Transfer at NUS and NTU
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Study in Southeast Asia
Polytechnic diploma holders admitted to NUS or NTU skip modules they already covered. NUS grants up to 40 units of Advanced Placement Credits, worth about a year of study. NTU exempts up to 4 courses or 12 AU depending on your diploma and grades.
🎓 NUS caps Advanced Placement Credits (APC) at 40 units for a 3 or 4 year degree, split between elective and programme requirement credits.
20 of those NUS units go to every diploma holder from an approved polytechnic programme, no matter how long ago you graduated.
NTU exemptions run up to 4 courses or 12 AU based on how closely your diploma modules match the degree and the grades you scored.
From the AY2026 cohort, NTU's College of Computing and Data Science gives a standard 6 AU elective exemption to all local poly diploma holders.
⏱️ Exempted modules carry no grade, so they don't count toward your GPA at either university.
Why polytechnic graduates get a head start
Polytechnic diploma holders who move on to NUS or NTU already covered ground that matches parts of a degree curriculum. Both universities recognise this with advanced standing, letting you skip modules you've effectively passed already at your polytechnic.
The credit isn't automatic across every diploma and degree pairing. It depends on how closely your diploma content lines up with the degree you're entering.
NUS: Advanced Placement Credits
NUS calls its system Advanced Placement Credits (APC). Polytechnic diploma holders admitted into a 3 or 4 year programme can receive up to 40 units of APC, which NUS treats as equivalent to one year of study. The NUS Office of Admissions splits this cap into two parts.
| Credit type | Maximum units |
|---|---|
| Unrestricted Elective Courses (UEC) | 20 units |
| Programme Requirements | 20 units |
The 20 units of UEC credit go to every diploma holder from an approved polytechnic programme, regardless of when the diploma was completed.
The other 20 units, tied to actual programme requirements, depend on how well your specific diploma modules map onto the degree you're admitted to. A diploma in a closely related field, such as an engineering diploma feeding into an engineering degree, tends to earn more of this second block than an unrelated diploma would.
Because APC reduces the number of modules you need to clear, it can shorten your time to graduation or free up space for a minor, an overseas exchange semester, or a lighter course load in a demanding year.
NTU: course exemptions
NTU runs a course exemption system rather than a fixed unit bank. Students holding an Advanced Certificate, a Diploma Plus certificate, or a Certificate of Merit or Distinction from their polytechnic may be considered for exemption from up to 4 courses, worth up to 12 Academic Units (AU). The exact number granted depends on the relevance of your polytechnic modules to the NTU course and the grades you achieved in them, and each school within NTU assesses this on its own criteria, so check the exemption page for your specific school, such as NTU's College of Computing and Data Science course exemption page .
NTU has also moved toward standardising some exemptions. From the AY2026 cohort, all local polytechnic diploma holders, regardless of which diploma they hold, receive a standardised 6 AU Broadening and Deepening Electives (BDE) exemption across College of Computing and Data Science degree programmes. This removes the case-by-case assessment for that specific elective category, though course-specific exemptions still follow the usual relevance and grade review.
What exemption does and doesn't do to your GPA
Exempted modules at both universities carry no grade. Your GPA is calculated only from the courses you actually take and complete after admission, since exempted courses never enter the grade record.
This works in your favour if your polytechnic grades in the exempted subjects were weak, because those marks never touch your university transcript. It also means the exemption doesn't pad your GPA. Your standing depends entirely on how you perform in the modules you go on to take.
How to check what you'll get
Neither university publishes a single universal table matching every polytechnic diploma to every degree programme, because the mapping depends on your specific diploma and the specific degree. Apply through the regular admissions process, and NUS or NTU will assess your transcript and issue an APC or exemption notice as part of your offer. If you're deciding between polytechnic courses with university progression in mind, ask the polytechnic's academic advisors which of their diploma options tend to receive stronger exemption outcomes at the university and course you're targeting.
Advanced standing is a real benefit for polytechnic graduates entering NUS or NTU, but treat it as a bonus on top of a strong application rather than the main factor in choosing a diploma. Admission still runs on your grades, portfolio, and, for some courses, interviews or aptitude tests.
