How Polytechnic GPA Cutoffs Decide Admission Into Singapore Universities

NUS admits polytechnic diploma holders using GPA, not a single cutoff. Its published grade profile shows admitted students' GPA running from about 3.18 to 4.00 across courses, with medicine clustered near the top of that range (Law's Polytechnic GPA is not published in the Indicative Grade Profile due to a small applicant sample size).
🎓 Each university course sets its own competitive GPA band, not a fixed pass mark.
NUS publishes an Indicative Grade Profile showing the 10th and 90th percentile GPA of students admitted to each course the previous year.
Meeting last year's GPA range does not guarantee a place this year, since competition changes with applicant numbers.
📩 Admission for competitive courses sometimes includes an aptitude test or interview on top of your GPA.
Diploma holders apply from any of Singapore's five polytechnics plus a small set of specialized institutions such as BCA Academy, LASALLE and NAFA.
Why Polytechnic Admission Runs on GPA, Not Exam Scores
Polytechnic diploma holders apply to university without an A-Level or IB result. Universities read your diploma GPA instead, alongside any relevant O-Level results still on file, non-academic achievements and, for some courses, an interview or aptitude test.
NUS accepts applicants from Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, and a small set of specialized institutions including BCA Academy, LASALLE College of the Arts and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, according to NUS admission requirements for polytechnic diploma holders . NUS states it does not use a single minimum GPA threshold, and instead runs open competition based on academic merit, non-academic achievements and additional interviews or tests where a course requires them.
How GPA Is Calculated at Polytechnic
Polytechnic diploma GPA is a weighted average across every module you take, usually on a 4-point scale, with major-related modules often carrying more weight than general education modules. Your final diploma GPA reflects performance across all semesters, not a single capstone result.
Because GPA accumulates from your first semester, a slow start makes the target range harder to reach later, even with a strong final year. Treat every semester, including your first, as part of your university application.
How the Indicative Grade Profile Works
Because there is no published fixed cutoff, NUS instead releases an Indicative Grade Profile (IGP) after each admission cycle. For polytechnic diploma applicants, this shows the GPA of the 10th and 90th percentile of students admitted to each course the year before, according to the NUS Indicative Grade Profile page .
Across NUS courses, admitted polytechnic diploma holders' GPA in the published profile runs from about 3.18 to 4.00, with medicine clustered near the top of that range (Law's Polytechnic GPA is not published in the Indicative Grade Profile due to a small applicant sample size). Less competitive courses sit lower in the band, though the exact figure shifts every year based on how many students apply and how many places are available.
NUS is explicit that meeting a previous year's GPA range does not guarantee admission for the current intake. Treat the published range as a benchmark for how competitive a course was last year, not a fixed pass mark for this year.
Applying With a Lower GPA
A GPA below a course's published range does not rule out an application outright, since NUS runs open competition rather than an automatic cutoff. Non-academic achievements, a closely related diploma, and strong interview or test performance where a course requires one offset a GPA below the previous year's range, though the odds get harder the further below the range you sit.
What Else Factors Into Your Application
GPA is the main academic input, but it is not the only one. NUS also weighs non-academic achievements, and some courses require an interview, portfolio or aptitude test on top of your GPA and diploma relevance. A diploma closely related to your target course strengthens your case even at the same GPA as a less related diploma.
Successful applicants sometimes receive advanced placement credits based on their diploma content, cutting up to 40 units from the degree requirement at NUS.
What a Course-Specific Diploma Adds
NUS and other universities look favorably on a diploma directly related to the degree you are applying for, on top of GPA. A polytechnic diploma in engineering applying to an NUS engineering course carries different weight than the same GPA earned through an unrelated diploma. If you already know your target degree, choosing a closely matched polytechnic diploma from the outset strengthens your later university application beyond GPA alone.
How to Use This Information When Planning Your Application
Check the current Indicative Grade Profile for your specific target course before applying, not the overall university average.
Treat published GPA ranges as a guide to competitiveness, not a guaranteed cutoff, since the range shifts every intake.
Keep your GPA as high as possible through all semesters of your diploma, since universities look at your overall diploma GPA across every semester, not only your final one.
Ask your polytechnic's career or higher education office which diploma specializations map most closely to your target university course.
Check whether your target course requires an interview, portfolio or test in addition to GPA, and prepare for that separately from your academic results.
Other Universities Run Similar Systems
NTU, SMU, SIT and SUSS each publish their own admission requirements and indicative grade information for polytechnic diploma holders, and each sets its own GPA competitiveness by course. If you plan to apply to more than one university, check each one's own admissions page separately, since a GPA competitive for one course at one university does not automatically transfer to a similar course elsewhere.
