Why Singaporean students consider Malaysia

Local medicine places at NUS and NTU take a small share of each cohort, so some Singaporean students who miss local cutoffs or a local university place look at Malaysia instead, drawn by geographic closeness, English-medium teaching in many programmes and lower living costs than the UK or Australia. Whether that route works depends on one thing: does the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) recognize the specific school and programme you attend.

Only three Malaysian schools are recognized

As of 1 February 2026, SMC recognizes three Malaysian medical schools: Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), whose School of Medical Sciences joined the list on that date, according to CodeBlue . Graduates of these three, regardless of nationality and whether they graduated before or after the recognition date, can apply for SMC registration once they meet SMC's other requirements.

All three are public universities with their own competitive admission process and limited seats reserved for international applicants. Choosing Malaysia over Singapore does not mean an easier admission process. It means a different, still competitive, admission process with different entry criteria and application timelines. Contact each university's international admissions office directly for current entry requirements, since these are set independently by each school.

Private Malaysian medical schools: check before you assume

Malaysia has well known private medical universities that are popular with international students and, in some cases, easier to gain admission to than the public universities above. As of the current SMC Second Schedule, these private schools are not on the list of schools recognized for SMC registration. A degree from a school not on the list does not qualify you for SMC registration in Singapore, regardless of the school's reputation or recognition elsewhere, such as with the Malaysian Medical Council.

If a private Malaysian medical school markets itself as a path back to Singapore, verify that claim yourself on the current SMC list at smc.gov.sg rather than taking the school's word for it. Recognition lists change, so a school not currently listed could be added later, but you cannot plan your career around a possible future addition.

What the programmes look like

Malaysian MBBS or MD programmes typically run five to six years, including pre-clinical and clinical years, similar in structure to programmes in Singapore, the UK and Australia. Teaching at UM, UKM and USM is largely in English for the medical faculty, though you may encounter some coursework or clinical communication in Bahasa Malaysia, so ask each university how much of the clinical training happens in English versus the local language.

Application timeline

Malaysian public university intakes generally follow the local academic calendar, with international applications opening well ahead of the main intake later in the year. Start researching each university's international application portal, required documents and deadline in your final year of secondary school or junior college, since public university application windows in Malaysia often close earlier than equivalent Singapore or UK deadlines.

Cost considerations

Public university medicine in Malaysia generally costs less than a UK, Irish or Australian medical degree for an international student, though fees for foreign applicants at Malaysian public universities usually sit above the fees charged to Malaysian citizens. Request a full fee schedule covering every year of the programme, including the foreign-student fee tier, directly from the university's international office before you commit, since headline fees quoted online do not always reflect the international rate. Compare that full cost, plus flights and living expenses over five to six years, against the equivalent cost of studying medicine in the UK, Ireland or Australia, rather than comparing tuition alone.

Housemanship: one country's supervised practice may not count in the other

Malaysia requires its own compulsory housemanship for MBBS graduates before full local registration. Do not assume time spent on housemanship in Malaysia automatically satisfies SMC's supervised practice requirement in Singapore. Ask SMC directly, before you graduate, whether your specific housemanship arrangement counts, so you can plan realistically for how long the full path back to full registration in Singapore takes.

If SMC recognition matters to your plan

If your goal is to practise medicine in Singapore, apply only to UM, UKM or USM among Malaysian options, and confirm current entry requirements and international quotas directly with each university before you commit. If you are open to practising outside Singapore, or a career in research, public health or another field that does not require SMC registration, a wider range of Malaysian medical schools becomes relevant, since SMC recognition would not be the limiting factor.

• Ask each public university directly about international student quotas for medicine and current entry requirements.

• Do not assume a private Malaysian medical degree brings you back to SMC registration in Singapore.
