TL;DR

To use a UK law degree to qualify as a Singapore lawyer, you need a degree from a UK university on Singapore's official "Overseas Scheduled University" list, graduate with at least a 2:2 Honours or a top-70% class rank, then pass Part A and Part B of the Singapore Bar Examinations before a 12-month practice training period.

  • 🎓 Only law degrees from specific UK universities named in the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules count. Check the current list on SILE's website before you commit to a university.

  • Minimum grade: Lower Second Class (2:2) Honours, or a rank in the top 70% of your graduating class if your university does not classify degrees that way.

  • ⏱️ Path after your LLB: pass Part A exams, complete the Part B preparatory course and exams, get admitted as Lawyer (Non-Practitioner), finish a 12-month practice training period, then get admitted as Advocate and Solicitor.

  • Only Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents can sit Part A.

Singaporeans Studying Law in the UK: LLB Routes and Qualifying for the Singapore Bar

Why the university you choose matters

Singapore does not recognize every UK law degree for Bar admission. The Singapore Institute of Legal Education (SILE) only accepts degrees from UK universities named as "Overseas Scheduled Universities" in the Second Schedule to the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules. This list is set by the Ministry of Law and reviewed periodically, so a university that qualifies today is not guaranteed to stay on the list forever, and a university left off the list will not give you a route into the Singapore Bar no matter how strong its law programme is. Before you accept an offer or apply through UCAS, check SILE's current published list directly rather than relying on rankings, agent advice, or older articles, since the list does change.

Grades that actually count

SILE requires graduates from a scheduled UK university to hold at least a Lower Second Class (2:2) Honours degree, or, for universities that do not use the UK honours classification system, a rank among the highest 70% of your graduating cohort. A first or upper second (2:1) gives you more room if your final year has a rough patch, but the formal bar for Part A eligibility itself is the 2:2. Aim well above the minimum, since law firms and pupillage providers in both the UK and Singapore weigh your degree classification heavily regardless of the Bar's own threshold.

The path from LLB to Singapore lawyer

Qualifying as a Singapore lawyer with a UK LLB runs through several fixed stages after you graduate.

  1. Confirm eligibility: Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident, law degree from a scheduled UK university, minimum 2:2 Honours or top-70% ranking.

  2. Pass Part A of the Singapore Bar Examinations , which tests six subjects: Company Law, Criminal Law, Evidence Law, Land Law, the Singapore Legal System, and Ethics. Passing Part A makes you a Qualified Person. An optional preparatory course is available before sitting the exams.

  3. Attend the mandatory Part B preparatory course and pass the Part B Bar Examinations, after which you are admitted as a Lawyer (Non-Practitioner).

  4. Complete a 12-month practice training period at a Singapore law practice.

  5. Apply for admission as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore, the final qualification to practice.

Part A is offered twice a year, so plan your graduation timing and any gap year around the exam sessions rather than assuming a slot is always available immediately after you finish your LLB.

Applying to a UK law school with Singapore in mind

Apply through UCAS like any other UK undergraduate applicant, but shortlist only from universities on SILE's current scheduled list from the start, rather than picking a university first and checking recognition afterward. A three-year LLB is standard in the UK versus four years for a Singapore law degree, so factor that shorter overseas timeline into your overall plan when you compare paths. If you are considering a joint degree, a conversion course, or a non-law undergraduate degree followed by a law conversion, check with SILE directly on whether that combination still counts as an approved law degree, since the scheduled list generally covers standard LLB programmes.

What to check with the Law Society before committing

Beyond SILE's academic requirements, the Law Society of Singapore and law firms set their own expectations around training contracts, vacation schemes, and pupillage-equivalent placements, which affect how smoothly you move from Part B into your 12-month practice training. Build a relationship with firms during your UK degree, through vacation schemes or internships, so your practice training placement after Part B is not something you scramble to arrange only after you already hold Qualified Person status.
