Singapore GCE A-Level to UK University: What Your H1, H2, and H3 Grades Mean to Admissions Teams
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published May 16, 2026 • Education Planning
Singapore GCE A-Level H2 subjects are treated as direct equivalents to UK A-Levels by major UK universities, including UCL, Imperial, Edinburgh, and Oxford. In the 2024 cycle, 94.2% of Singapore candidates passed at least 3 H2 subjects. The October 15 UCAS deadline applies to Oxford, Cambridge, and medicine courses.
What Singapore's GCE A-Level Is
The Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level is not the same qualification as the UK A-Level, even though the names sound identical. Use our UCAS Tariff Point Calculator to convert your Singapore grades to UCAS points. It is conducted jointly by Singapore's Ministry of Education (MOE), the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB ), and the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. In 2006, Singapore introduced the revised H1, H2, and H3 tiered curriculum, replacing the older AO, A, and S paper structure inherited from the UK system.
Students sit this exam after two years of Junior College (JC), which covers roughly the equivalent of Grades 11 and 12. Millennia Institute runs a three-year pre-university course, but all other JCs operate on a two-year cycle.
The critical structural difference lies in how subjects are tiered. Singapore uses three levels: H1, H2, and H3. The UK uses a single A-Level tier. Understanding this distinction is what determines how your transcript reads to a British admissions tutor.
How H1, H2, and H3 Map to the UK System

The H in H1, H2, and H3 stands for Higher. Each level represents a different depth of study and carries a different academic unit (AU) weight within Singapore's own system.
| Level | Depth | UK Equivalent | Academic Units |
|---|---|---|---|
| H1 | Introductory / breadth | AS Level | 1 AU |
| H2 | Full subject depth | A-Level | 2 AU |
| H3 | Extension beyond H2 | No direct UK equivalent | Not counted separately |
UK universities read H2 grades as direct A-Level equivalents. According to UCAS Qualification Information Profiles , H1 is broadly equivalent to AS Level, and H2 is equivalent to A Level.
H3 subjects are taken on top of H2 studies and allow students to go deeper into a subject, often in collaboration with universities. They do not add to the AU count, but they are taken into consideration by competitive universities, particularly Oxford and Cambridge, when a student has already completed their A-Levels.
A typical Singapore JC student takes three H2 subjects plus one H1 subject, alongside H1 General Paper (or H2 Knowledge and Inquiry) and H1 Project Work. The maximum academic load is 12 units. Students must also include at least one subject from a contrasting discipline under MOE regulations.
Which UK Universities Accept Singapore GCE A-Levels
Every major UK university accepts the Singapore GCE A-Level for undergraduate entry. The three H2 subjects are what admissions teams focus on. Below is a breakdown of stated grade requirements from official university sources:
| University | Stated Requirement |
|---|---|
| University of Edinburgh | ABB across three H2 subjects (Arts). AAA at H2 for competitive Science programs |
| UCL | ABB to AAA depending on programme. Minimum benchmark is ABB |
| Imperial College London | A grades in three or four H2 subjects, including Mathematics and Physics for engineering |
| University of Manchester | AAA to ABB range depending on faculty. Confirm with the specific school |
| Oxford and Cambridge | AAA at H2 as a standard minimum. A* equivalent is treated as H2 A grade |
Oxford and Cambridge do not award the A* grade in the Singapore system. For courses in the UK requiring A* in UK A-Levels, both Oxford and Cambridge treat a Singapore H2 A grade as the equivalent. According to Macro Academy's Oxford/Cambridge guide for Singaporeans , Singapore applicants had a 26.5% success rate at Cambridge in the 2024 admissions cycle, against an overall university-wide rate of roughly 16%.
The UCAS Application Process for Singapore Students

Singapore students apply through UCAS using the same platform as UK applicants. The key deadlines for 2026 entry were:
- 15 October 2025: Oxford, Cambridge, and most medicine, dentistry, and veterinary courses
- 14 January 2026 (18:00 UK time): Equal consideration deadline for all other undergraduate courses at UK universities
- 30 June 2026: Final deadline. Applications after this date go directly into Clearing
When filling in qualifications on UCAS, select "Singapore-Cambridge GCE Advanced Level" as the qualification type. For each subject, specify the level (H1, H2, or H3) and the examination body. SEAB handles Project Work and Mother Tongue language subjects. SEAB-CIE covers General Paper, Knowledge and Inquiry, and most H2 content subjects.
For students still completing their A-Levels, predicted grades from your JC are submitted via UCAS. Confirmed results from SEAB are submitted after results release, which for the 2024 cohort occurred on 21 February 2025.
The Anglo-Chinese Junior College UCAS briefing slides provide a detailed walkthrough of how to enter Singapore qualifications into the UCAS system, including the correct examination body codes.
2025 Changes to Singapore's UAS and What They Mean for Your UK Application
The 2025 examination cohort (entering AY2026 university admissions) was the first to sit the GCE A-Level under a revised University Admission Score (UAS) computation. The maximum UAS score dropped from 90 to 70 points. The UAS now counts three H2 content subjects plus H1 General Paper, with the fourth content-based subject included only if it improves the final UAS.
This reform affects how students prioritise their time in JC but does not affect how UK universities read the transcript. UK admissions teams look at H2 subject grades directly, not the Singapore UAS figure. The MOE's press release on 2025 A-Level results confirmed 94.7% of candidates attained at least three H2 passes with a pass in General Paper, up from 94.2% in 2024.
Singapore GCE A-Level vs IB: The Practical Comparison
Some Singapore schools offer the IB Diploma Programme as an alternative to the GCE A-Level. Both are accepted by UK universities. The choice between them affects workload, assessment format, and how flexibly you position yourself for different university systems.
| Factor | Singapore GCE A-Level | IB Diploma |
|---|---|---|
| Subject depth | Three to four subjects at depth | Six subjects spread across disciplines |
| Assessment | Primarily written examinations | Mix of exams, internal assessments, and extended essay |
| UK university recognition | Direct H2 to A-Level equivalency | Accepted with specific point requirements |
| US university recognition | Evaluated on a case-by-case basis | Widely standardised |
| Workload structure | Subject-focused. Stress concentrated at exam period | Continuous assessment with Theory of Knowledge and CAS requirements |
No top UK university will reject you for choosing A-Levels over IB. Both routes work. The difference: A-Levels let you go deep into fewer subjects, which suits students who already know their intended degree field.
A Real Application: Raffles Institution Student, UCL Law
Raffles Institution (RI) in Singapore publishes a UCAS application guide specifically for its students applying to the UK. A student from RI applying to UCL's LLB Law programme would typically present H2 subjects in Literature, Economics, and History, with H1 Mathematics as the contrasting discipline.
UCL Law's standard offer sits at AAA at UK A-Level, with AAB available only as a contextual offer through the Access UCL scheme for eligible applicants from underrepresented groups. Under Singapore equivalency, A grades across three H2 subjects map to the standard offer, since UCL treats an H2 A as the A equivalent in the Singapore system. RI's higher education office processes the UCAS reference and predicted grades in October, with confirmed results submitted in February after SEAB releases them. UK universities provide conditional offers in January and February, with conditions to be met upon confirmed A-Level results.
This timeline is a practical point of friction for Singapore applicants. Results arrive in February, but the UK academic year starts in September. Students have approximately seven months between results day and enrollment. Male students completing National Service before studying in the UK face an additional gap.
English Language Requirements
Singapore's medium of instruction is English, and most UK universities treat this as sufficient evidence of English proficiency. Students taught and assessed in English at JC level typically satisfy the language requirement without a separate IELTS score. Confirm this directly with each university's admissions team, as individual programme requirements vary.
