Skilled Migration After Study: Pathways to Permanent Residency in Australia, Canada and New Zealand for ASEAN Graduates

TL;DR

Australia, Canada and New Zealand all rank skilled migration candidates by points that weigh age, education, language ability and work experience, not a first come first served queue. Meeting the minimum score gets you into the pool, it does not guarantee an invitation, since each country also caps how many places it issues per programme year.

  • 🎓 Australia: 65 points is the minimum to enter the SkillSelect pool, but real invitations often need 75 to 90 plus depending on your occupation

  • Canada: Express Entry ranks you out of 1200 points, half from core skills, half from added factors like a provincial nomination

  • 🏠 New Zealand: you need 6 skilled residence points from your qualifications, registration, income or New Zealand work experience

  • Studying in the destination country before you apply adds points and local work experience in all three systems

How points-based skilled migration works

A permanent residency points system ranks every candidate in a pool against factors like age, education level, language test scores and work experience, then invites the highest scorers in periodic rounds. This differs from a temporary post-study work visa, which lets you work for a set period without ranking you against other applicants. Australia, Canada and New Zealand all run points-based systems for their main skilled migration streams, and all three changed parts of their rules in 2025, so figures you read from a few years ago may no longer apply.

Australia: SkillSelect and the General Skilled Migration points test

Australia's points test, run through the SkillSelect system, sets 65 points as the minimum score to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), according to the Department of Home Affairs . Reaching 65 gets you into the pool. It does not guarantee an invitation, since invitation rounds pull from the highest scorers first and competitive occupations often see effective cutoffs of 75 to 90 points or higher.

Three visa subclasses use this points test. Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) needs no state nomination or sponsorship and lets you live anywhere in Australia. Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated) requires a state or territory government nomination, adds 5 points to your score, and commits you to living in that state for a minimum period. Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional) is a 5-year provisional visa requiring state or territory nomination or eligible family sponsorship, adds 15 points, and leads to a permanent visa once you meet regional residence and income requirements. Australia set its 2025-26 Migration Program at 185,000 places, with skilled migration streams making up the largest share of that total.

Canada: Express Entry and the Comprehensive Ranking System

Canada's Express Entry system ranks candidates using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), scored out of 1200 points, as detailed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) . Up to 600 points come from core human capital factors: your age, education level, official language ability in English or French, and work experience. The remaining 600 points come from additional factors, the largest of which is a provincial nomination, worth a large fixed point total, alongside smaller amounts for French language ability, a sibling living in Canada, or Canadian educational credentials.

As of March 25, 2025, IRCC removed the points previously awarded for a valid job offer from the CRS, so a job offer alone no longer raises your score the way it once did. For students, the common route runs from study at a Designated Learning Institution, to graduation, to a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), to Canadian work experience that both qualifies you for the Canadian Experience Class and raises your CRS score, then an Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Program application. The full path from first day of study to permanent residency typically takes 4 to 6 years, covering roughly two years of study, a year or more of work, and 6 to 18 months of PR processing.

New Zealand: Skilled Migrant Category points

New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa uses a smaller points scale. You need at least 6 skilled residence points before Immigration New Zealand can invite you to apply, according to Immigration New Zealand . You can claim 3 to 6 points from one skill category, either your New Zealand occupational registration, your qualifications, or your income level, then add points from skilled New Zealand work experience if you still need more to reach 6.

On September 23, 2025, the New Zealand government announced changes to the SMC aimed at helping employers attract and retain skilled workers, taking effect in August 2026, including increased points for New Zealand university-level qualifications and a reduced New Zealand work experience requirement, down from a maximum of 3 years to 2 years for most migrants. Separately, further changes are scheduled to take effect August 24, 2026, introducing two new residence pathways: a skilled work experience pathway for migrants with at least 5 years of relevant experience including 2 years in New Zealand at 1.1 times the median wage, and a trades and technician pathway for migrants with a relevant Level 4 or higher qualification and at least 4 years of post-qualification experience including 18 months in New Zealand at or above the median wage, per Immigration New Zealand .

What this means if you are studying abroad

Build your points profile early rather than after you graduate. A strong language test score, a recognized qualification, and local work experience under a post-study work permit move you toward the threshold in all three systems, and none of the three grant permanent residency automatically just because you studied there. Rules on caps, financial requirements and post-study work rights have shifted across all three destinations in the 2025-2026 period, so check the official immigration website for your target country before you plan around a specific points figure.
