What the Student Loan Trust Fund Covers

The Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) gives loans to Ghanaian students studying at accredited tertiary institutions across the country. The loan covers tuition and related costs while you study, with no processing fee and no need for personal connections or a protocol list, according to SLTF .

Any Ghanaian citizen enrolled in an accredited program at an accredited tertiary institution qualifies to apply. The fund is not limited to public universities. Technical universities, colleges of education, and other accredited institutions count too.

Who Can Apply

  • You are Ghanaian and hold a valid Ghana Card.

  • You are admitted to or enrolled in an accredited tertiary institution in Ghana.

  • Your program is accredited.

  • You have a personal email address to create your account.

Choosing a Guarantor

Every applicant needs a guarantor. SLTF accepts four categories, and self-guaranteeing is not allowed.

Guarantor typeRequirements
SSNIT contributorGhanaian, at least 36 months of active SSNIT contributions, aged 53 or under, limited to 1 guarantee (parents guaranteeing their own children are exempt from this limit), no cross-guaranteeing between two SSNIT contributors
Registered religious bodyNationally registered for at least 10 years, backed by an institutional resolution approving the guarantee
Metropolitan, Municipal or District Assembly (MMDA)Assembly resolution naming 2 authorized signatories
Corporate bodyGhana Club 100 member or listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, backed by a board resolution with 2 senior management signatories

Pick a guarantor you reach easily during the application. Delays with guarantor documentation are a common reason applications stall.

Documents to Prepare

  • Ghana Card, yours and your guarantor's where relevant

  • Admission or continuing student letter from your institution

  • Guarantor resolution or supporting documents matching the guarantor type you choose

  • A working personal email address and phone number

Step by Step: How to Apply

  1. Create an account on the SLTF portal using your Ghana Card details and personal email.

  2. Complete the application form with your institution, program, and guarantor details.

  3. SLTF reviews your application and verifies your guarantor's documents.

  4. Once approved, your loan moves to disbursement.

Applying Again Each Year

SLTF loans tie to a single academic year, so plan to reapply for each year you need funding. Keep your guarantor's documents and your own Ghana Card details current, since expired SSNIT contributions or a lapsed assembly resolution hold up a renewal application.

Deadlines Change Every Cycle

SLTF closes applications on a fixed date each academic year and does not accept late submissions. For the 2022/23 academic year, applications closed on 20 November 2023, according to SLTF . Check the current academic year's deadline on the portal as soon as you get admission, since dates shift from cycle to cycle.

If Your Application Stalls

Most delays come from guarantor paperwork, not from SLTF itself. Confirm your SSNIT contributor guarantor has at least 36 months of contributions before you submit, and get any institutional or assembly resolution signed in advance if you use a religious body, MMDA, or corporate guarantor. A Ghana Card that does not match your admission documents also causes rejections, so check that your name and details are identical everywhere.
