TL;DR

Since 18 June 2025, US F, M and J visa applicants must set social media profiles to public and expect officers to review their full online presence.

  • 📩

Set every social media account used in the past 5 years to public before your interview.

  • 🎓

Officers check social media, search results, and media coverage, not just the DS-160 form.

  • ⏱️

Content read as supporting terrorism, antisemitism, or hostility to the US can lead to refusal.

  • ⏱️

Interview scheduling resumed 18 June 2025 after a pause tied to this policy rollout.

Social Media Screening for US Student Visas: What ASEAN Applicants Should Prepare For

What changed

On 18 June 2025, the US Department of State issued guidance expanding social media screening for F, M, and J nonimmigrant visa applicants, which covers most ASEAN students applying to study in the United States (US Department of State ). The DS-160 visa application form already asked applicants to list their social media handles from the past 5 years. The new guidance goes further: officers now conduct a comprehensive review of an applicant's public online presence as a standard part of visa screening.

What you need to do before applying

  • Set the privacy settings on all social media profiles you have used in the past 5 years to public, so consular officers can review them as instructed.

  • List every platform and handle you have used in the past 5 years on your DS-160 form accurately, since omissions can be checked against your actual online footprint.

  • Review your own posts, likes, shares, and group memberships across all platforms before your interview, since officers look beyond your visa form.

What officers review

Consular officers use all available open-source information during screening, including social media, search engine results, and media coverage of the applicant, according to the Department of State announcement . This is broader than a single platform check. A post, share, or public comment from years ago can surface during this review even if you no longer actively use that account.

What can lead to refusal

Content that shows support for terrorism, antisemitism, or hostility toward the United States, its founding principles, or its government may lead to visa ineligibility, per the same Department of State guidance. This standard is broad and applies to public posts, shares, and comments, not only original content you write yourself.

Interview scheduling

US consular posts resumed scheduling F, M, and J visa interviews from 18 June 2025, after a pause tied to the rollout of this screening process. Applicants may see limited interview slots in the weeks after a new policy phase begins, so book your interview slot as early as your SEVIS record and I-20 or DS-2019 allow, rather than waiting until close to your intake date.

Practical steps for ASEAN applicants

Check your embassy or consulate's local visa wait times before you plan your interview date, since availability shifts as consular posts adjust to the new screening workload. Your nearest US embassy in an ASEAN country (Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Bangkok, Hanoi, Singapore, Phnom Penh, Yangon, Vientiane, Bandar Seri Begawan) publishes its own appointment wait times and visa requirements. Start your visa process as soon as your school issues your I-20 or DS-2019, since the combined steps of SEVIS fee payment, DS-160 completion, and interview scheduling take longer with expanded screening in place.
