How University Admission Works in Somalia

No central placement body

Somalia does not run a joint university placement system the way Kenya's KUCCPS or Nigeria's JAMB do. There is no single portal that ranks your grades against a national cut-off and slots you into a course. Instead, each university, public or private, sets its own entry requirements and runs its own application process.

This decentralized setup traces back to how the sector rebuilt itself. After the 1991 civil war closed most of the country's institutions, higher education came back mainly through independent, often private, initiatives rather than a rebuilt central authority. Mogadishu University asks for a Secondary School Certificate accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education or the equivalent authority in your home country, useful if you finished school outside Somalia. Applications go straight to the university, not through a shared national system. Because there is no single cut-off list, missing entry at one university does not close your options.
