Studying Mining, Geology, and FinTech in South Africa: What International Students Need to Know
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published May 16, 2026 • Study Abroad
South Africa hosts roughly 80% of global PGM-bearing ore deposits and the continent's top mining school, Wits, ranked 11th globally by QS in 2025. International students pay roughly double local tuition at Wits for mining engineering. UCT runs a focused FinTech master's program in the School of Economics, admitting no more than 15 students per year.
Why South Africa Is the Strongest Option in Africa for These Fields
South Africa sits on highly mineral-rich crust. The Bushveld Igneous Complex in the north of the country hosts roughly 80% of the world's PGM-bearing ore deposits, according to the Minerals Council of South Africa .
Per-metal shares of global reserves vary, with roughly 75% of platinum, 54% of palladium, and 82% of rhodium attributed to South African deposits. The country also holds approximately 68 million troy ounces of gold reserves, according to PwC's 2023 SA Mine report .
That geology is not incidental to the universities. It is the reason the top mining and geology programs here are built around active, large-scale operations rather than simulations.
For FinTech, South Africa is the gateway to a continent where mobile-first financial infrastructure is growing faster than in many established markets. The University of Cape Town runs a focused FinTech master's degree in its School of Economics.
The Top Programs and What They Actually Offer

Wits School of Mining Engineering
The Wits School of Mining Engineering in Johannesburg ranked 11th globally in the 2025 QS World University Rankings for Mineral and Mining Engineering. This is the highest any African mining school has ever ranked.
Programs available at Wits:
- BSc Mining Engineering (undergraduate, 3-4 years)
- MSc Mining Engineering (postgraduate, coursework and research)
- MSc Rock Engineering (two-year specialist program, one of the few in the world)
- PhD Mining Engineering
The rock engineering program stands out. South Africa pioneered deep-level hard rock mining, and Wits built its curriculum directly around that expertise. No other African university offers this at postgraduate depth.
University of Pretoria: Mining Engineering and Geology
The University of Pretoria (UP) offers a BEng (Mining Engineering) in both 4-year and 5-year formats. The university sits close to the Gauteng mining and industrial belt, giving students direct access to industry placement.
UP's geology department covers applied economic geology, structural geology, engineering geology, and hydrogeology. These are not theoretical tracks: graduates go directly into exploration, resource assessment, and mine geology roles.
UP programs for 2025:
| Program | Duration | Format |
|---|---|---|
| BEng Mining Engineering (4-year) | 4 years | Full-time |
| BEng Mining Engineering (5-year) | 5 years | Full-time with extended foundation |
| BSc Geology | 3 years | Full-time |
UCT MPhil in Financial Technology
The MPhil specialising in Financial Technology at the University of Cape Town is a focused FinTech master's degree. The program sits in the School of Economics, with coursework developed alongside the UCT Department of Statistics and the Financial Innovation Hub.
Key details:
- Intake: No more than 15 students per year
- Entry requirement: Relevant Honours degree or equivalent, with an above-65% average used as a guideline rather than a binding minimum
- Duration: One year, full-time or part-time
- Curriculum: Includes elective courses plus a 60-credit dissertation
- Location: In-person, Cape Town (morning and late afternoon classes)
Wits also runs a Master of Commerce in Financial Technology covering Python, SQL, machine learning, financial software, and blockchain. This program takes one year full-time or two years part-time.
What International Students Pay
Fees at South African universities follow a consistent structure.
Students from outside the Southern African Development Community (SADC) pay double the domestic tuition.
SADC students pay local rates plus an International Registration Fee.
At Wits, the International Registration Fee is ZAR 6,970 per year, non-refundable. Non-SADC students pay roughly double the local mining engineering tuition. Undergraduate international fees at Wits overall range from ZAR 120,000 to ZAR 180,000 per year depending on the program.
At University of Pretoria, domestic tuition for mining engineering runs approximately ZAR 122,000 per year. International students (non-SADC) pay roughly double that.
SADC members include Angola, Botswana, DRC, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The Study Permit Process
South Africa issues study visas through the Department of Home Affairs. The application form is BI-1738. The visa fee was ZAR 1,520 as of late 2024.
Required documents:
- Official acceptance letter signed by the university Registrar
- Proof of financial means covering tuition, accommodation, and living costs
- Medical aid cover from a scheme registered under the South African Medical Schemes Act (foreign health insurance is not accepted)
- Police clearance certificate from every country where you lived for 12 months or more since age 18
- Proof of accommodation
Visas are issued for the duration of the program, up to a maximum of three years initially, and are renewable. Students endorsed for part-time work on the visa are allowed up to 20 hours per week during term time.
What Happens After Graduation: The Critical Skills Visa

South Africa's Critical Skills Work Visa launched under new regulations on 8 October 2024. The revised system uses a points-based approach, with applicants needing a minimum of 100 points.
Geologists and mining engineers appear on the official critical skills list. Applicants in listed occupations automatically score 100 points through their occupation alone.
The visa is valid for up to five years and is renewable from within South Africa. Processing now takes approximately 8 to 12 weeks from date of application.
The critical skills pathway is also a route toward permanent residency for those who remain in South Africa and build up qualifying work experience.
Industry Exposure on the Ground
In 2024, doctoral students from Penn State University's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences traveled to South Africa to attend the Mintek@90 Conference, presenting research alongside South African academic and industry participants. This is the environment international students enter when they study here: active operations, active industry, and direct exposure to large-scale problems. The presence of North American institutions at South African mining conferences signals strategic research partnerships with universities in North America and Europe.
Which Program Fits Your Goals
Use this framework to decide which track fits your profile:
| Your goal | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate mining engineering, top-ranked | Wits BSc Mining Engineering |
| Deep-level mining or rock engineering at postgraduate level | Wits MSc Rock Engineering |
| Applied geology close to active mining districts | UP BSc Geology |
| FinTech, small cohort, rigorous economics-based curriculum | UCT MPhil Financial Technology |
| FinTech with coding and machine learning focus | Wits MCom Financial Technology |
| Distance learning in mining engineering | UNISA (Mineral Engineering modules) |
If your undergraduate degree is from a SADC country and you want to minimize cost, note that SADC students pay local tuition rates at all three institutions, which materially changes the cost calculation compared to students from outside the region. Browse all universities in south africa.
Application Timelines
South African universities open applications for the following year between July and September. Wits and UCT both have international application portals that run separately from domestic applications.
UCT's MPhil in FinTech accepts no more than 15 students, so applications submitted early in the window have a material advantage.
The study visa application should follow acceptance, with enough lead time to gather police clearances and arrange medical aid coverage. South African medical schemes with student plans include Discovery, Momentum, and Bonitas.
