South Carolina's four state scholarships pay from $2,800 to $7,500 a year on top of federal aid: Palmetto Fellows for the top students, LIFE for most B-average graduates, SC HOPE as a freshman-year bridge, and a need-based grant for lower-income families. File the FAFSA and apply through your high school senior year to qualify.

Start with the FAFSA
Every South Carolina state aid program requires the FAFSA on file, even the merit scholarships that do not look at income. File it as soon as it opens for the year you plan to enroll, since some campus aid is first-come, first-served.
Stack a state scholarship with the FAFSA-based aid below and tuition at an in-state public university drops fast. A student who lands the LIFE Scholarship and qualifies for the Need-based Grant can cover most of a year's tuition and fees at a South Carolina public university before touching loans, well before factoring in any federal Pell Grant.
Palmetto Fellows Scholarship: the top merit award
Palmetto Fellows is South Carolina's largest merit scholarship, worth $6,700 in your freshman year and $7,500 a year after that, with an extra $2,500 for STEM majors who keep a 3.0 GPA in a qualifying major. To qualify entering as a freshman you need one of two paths.

You must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident, a South Carolina resident, and apply through CHE during your senior year of high school . A felony conviction or a second drug or alcohol misdemeanor disqualifies you.
LIFE Scholarship: the most common state award
The LIFE Scholarship pays $5,000 a year plus a $300 book allowance at four-year public and private South Carolina colleges, and covers tuition at two-year colleges. You qualify with a 3.0 cumulative GPA on the South Carolina Uniform Grading Policy at graduation. Renewal requires a 3.0 college GPA and 30 earned credit hours a year. Palmetto Fellows recipients cannot also collect LIFE. You get whichever scholarship you qualify for at the higher tier, since campuses do not stack the two.
SC HOPE Scholarship: a freshman-year bridge
SC HOPE pays $2,800 and only covers your first year at a four-year South Carolina college. It exists for first-time freshmen with a 3.0 final high school GPA who do not qualify for LIFE or Palmetto Fellows in year one. If your GPA and credit hours hit the LIFE benchmarks after freshman year, you move onto LIFE for the remaining years.
South Carolina Need-based Grant
The South Carolina Need-based Grant (SCNG) pays up to $3,500 a year for full-time students and up to $1,750 for part-time students at eligible public institutions, based on financial need shown on the FAFSA. Stacking your aid
The need-based grant stacks with Palmetto Fellows, LIFE or HOPE, since one is need-based and the others are merit-based. Combined with a Federal Pell Grant if you qualify, a South Carolina student with strong grades and financial need can cover a meaningful share of in-state tuition through grants and scholarships alone, before loans.
Campus scholarships stack on top
State scholarships are a floor, not a ceiling. USC, Clemson and most other South Carolina public campuses award their own merit scholarships based on the same admission profile you already submitted, and these generally stack with Palmetto Fellows, LIFE or HOPE. Check your admitted-student portal for campus-specific awards, since amounts and criteria differ by school and by year.
Private colleges: the Tuition Grants route
If you plan to attend an eligible South Carolina private nonprofit college instead of a public one, look into the South Carolina Tuition Grants program, a separate state aid line for residents at participating independent colleges. Ask the financial aid office at your chosen private college for the current award amount and how it stacks with LIFE, Palmetto Fellows or HOPE, since private-college rules differ from the public-campus rules covered above.
Deadlines and how to apply
Apply for Palmetto Fellows and LIFE through your high school counselor and CHE during senior year, ahead of the state's spring deadline for the fall you plan to enroll. File the FAFSA as early as it opens for the need-based grant and Pell Grant. Renewal for LIFE and Palmetto Fellows happens automatically through your college's financial aid office each year you hit the GPA and credit hour requirements, so check your grades against the renewal rules before the term ends.
