South Dakota Financial Aid: State Grants, Scholarships and Free College Programs

Start with the FAFSA

File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at studentaid.gov before you apply for any South Dakota state program. The FAFSA determines your eligibility for the federal Pell Grant, which tops out at $7,395 for the 2025-26 award year according to the Department of Education , and most South Dakota campuses use your FAFSA data to build your full financial aid package before adding any state or institutional scholarship.

South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship

The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship pays up to $7,500 over four academic years (eight consecutive fall and spring terms) to South Dakota residents who enroll at a participating public or private college or technical college within five years of high school graduation.

You qualify one of two ways. Option one needs an ACT composite or superscore of 24 or higher (or SAT equivalent), a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, and completion of a set high school curriculum with no grade below a C, covering four units each of language arts, math, and science plus units in social studies, world language or career and technical education, finance, PE, fine arts, and health. Option two needs an ACT composite or superscore of 28 or higher, with no curriculum or GPA requirement attached.

Apply by June 1 for the fall term as a first-time college student (September 1 is the final deadline), or by September 1 for spring (January 1 final). Transfer students apply by September 20 for fall or February 15 for spring. To renew, keep a cumulative 3.0 GPA, stay enrolled in consecutive fall and spring terms, and hit credit benchmarks of 30 credits by sophomore year, 60 by junior year, and 90 by senior year.

Build Dakota Scholarship

The Build Dakota Scholarship targets students headed into high-demand trades at South Dakota's four technical colleges: Lake Area, Mitchell, Southeast, and Western Dakota. Awards run from $20,000 to $60,000 depending on the program and cover full tuition, fees, books, technology, and tools.

You need U.S. citizenship and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, plus acceptance into an eligible program in a high-need field such as nursing, welding, automotive technology, or agriculture technology. In exchange, you commit to work in South Dakota with a program sponsor for three years after graduating. The next application window opens January 1, 2027 through March 31, 2027, since the 2026-27 cycle has already closed.

Dakota Corps Scholarship

The Dakota Corps Scholarship covers tuition and standard fees for 16 undergraduate credit hours per semester at public four-year colleges, with matching value at participating private and tribal colleges. You need a South Dakota high school GPA of 2.8 or higher, an ACT composite or superscore of 27 or higher (or SAT equivalent), U.S. citizenship, and enrollment within one year of high school graduation or military discharge.

You must study a program tied to a critical need occupation and agree in writing to work in that field in South Dakota. Your service obligation runs for the number of years you held the scholarship plus one additional year. Fail to complete it and the scholarship converts to a low-interest loan you repay.

Military and National Guard aid

South Dakota National Guard members serving in a state unit qualify for a full tuition reduction at Board of Regents universities once they finish basic training and stay in good standing, according to SDBOR's military tuition page . Junior and senior ROTC cadets who hold South Dakota residency get resident tuition cut in half for up to four semesters. Veterans who are current South Dakota residents can apply for a separate reduced-tuition program tied to war service through the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

Putting it together

• File the FAFSA every year, even if you expect a state scholarship to cover most costs.

• Apply for the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship in your senior year of high school, before the June or September deadlines.

• Consider Build Dakota or Dakota Corps if you are open to a work commitment in South Dakota after graduation in exchange for full tuition coverage.

• Ask your campus financial aid office about institutional scholarships stacked on top of state aid; most Regents universities award their own merit money separate from these state programs.
