How SPAN-PTKIN and UM-PTKIN Admit Students to Islamic State Universities

SPAN-PTKIN and UM-PTKIN are the two national routes into Indonesia's Islamic state universities: UIN, IAIN, and STAIN. SPAN-PTKIN runs on report card grades with no test, while UM-PTKIN is a paid computer test open to every applicant.
SPAN-PTKIN ranks applicants using report card grades, portfolio, and school accreditation, no exam
UM-PTKIN charges a registration fee and uses its own test, separate from UTBK
SPAN-PTKIN applicants choose 2 PTKIN campuses and 2 study programs at each
UM-PTKIN 2025 registration ran from 22 April to 28 May, results announced 30 June
Both routes sit under Kemenag, separate from the Kemdiktisaintek system for regular PTN
Two routes, one ministry
UIN (Universitas Islam Negeri), IAIN (Institut Agama Islam Negeri), and STAIN campuses fall under Kementerian Agama (Kemenag), not Kemdiktisaintek, so they run their own national admission system separate from SNBP and SNBT. That system has two routes: SPAN-PTKIN, an achievement-based selection using report card grades, and UM-PTKIN, a paid national test.
How SPAN-PTKIN works
SPAN-PTKIN, Seleksi Prestasi Akademik Nasional Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Islam Negeri, admits students using report card grades and other achievements, with no written exam. Schools submit student grades through PDSS, requiring completed report cards from grade 10 semester 1 through grade 12 semester 1.
A national committee ranks applicants on three factors: student quality (grades, supporting subjects, tahfidz Quran memorization, and other achievements), school quality (accreditation and the school's past record of accepted students who went on to register), and a regional index for applicants from 3T areas, frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped regions, according to a summary of the official SPAN-PTKIN 2025 guidelines published by UIN Syekh Ali Hasan Ahmad Addary. Applicants choose up to two PTKIN campuses and up to two study programs at each.
How UM-PTKIN works
UM-PTKIN, Ujian Masuk Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Islam Negeri, is the test-based alternative, open to any applicant regardless of school accreditation or report card ranking. You sit a computer-based test, SSE UM-PTKIN, distinct from the UTBK exam used for SNBT.
Registration carries a fee of IDR 200,000, paid through Bank Mandiri, according to Ruangguru .
For the 2025 cycle, registration opened April 22 and closed May 28, 2025, with account finalization allowed through May 31. Exam cards were available for printing from May 1, and the test itself ran across two windows, June 10-12 and June 14-18, 2025. Results came out June 30, 2025.
Choosing between the two
SPAN-PTKIN suits you if your report card is strong and consistent and your school carries solid accreditation, since it costs nothing to apply and needs no exam preparation. UM-PTKIN suits you if your school's SPAN-PTKIN quota is small, your grades understate your ability, or you are a gap-year applicant, since UM-PTKIN stays open to every applicant type. Applying to SPAN-PTKIN first and registering for UM-PTKIN afterward if unsuccessful works within the same cycle, provided you meet each route's own deadline.
What makes PTKIN different from a regular PTN
Beyond admission mechanics, PTKIN campuses combine general academic faculties, engineering, economics, health sciences, and more, with dedicated Islamic studies faculties in the same institution. A UIN typically offers the same range of secular majors as a regular PTN alongside programs in Islamic law, theology, and religious education, so choosing PTKIN over a regular PTN does not narrow your subject options to religious study alone.
After PTKIN's national routes, a mandiri option remains
PTKIN campuses also run their own jalur mandiri intake, similar to regular PTN, for seats left after SPAN-PTKIN and UM-PTKIN. Criteria, test format, and any fee are set individually by each UIN, IAIN, or STAIN, so check your target campus's own admission page for its mandiri terms rather than assuming they match the national SPAN-PTKIN or UM-PTKIN process.
