Student Life and Housing in Eswatini

Most Eswatini students start out in campus residence halls and move to shared off-campus housing once dorm space runs out. Budget for rent, food, transport, and mobile data alongside tuition, and expect prices in Lilangeni, which trades 1:1 with the South African Rand.

Where students live
The University of Eswatini runs residence halls at its Kwaluseni, Luyengo, and Mbabane campuses, but bed space is limited relative to enrollment. First-year students and those who live furthest from campus generally get priority for a residence place. If you are not offered a room, or if you attend one of the smaller private universities such as Limkokwing, SANU, or EMCU, you will need to find housing off campus.
Off-campus housing clusters around the towns closest to each campus, mainly Kwaluseni, Luyengo, Mbabane, and Manzini. Students typically share a house or flat between two and four people to keep individual rent manageable, and it helps to look for housing close to a kombi route so your daily commute stays short and cheap.
Managing your budget
Beyond tuition, your main recurring costs are rent, food, transport, mobile data or airtime, and books or stationery. Fees and everyday prices in Eswatini are billed in Lilangeni (SZL), which is pegged 1:1 to the South African Rand (ZAR). Both currencies circulate as legal tender, so prices track closely with neighboring South Africa.
A few habits stretch a student budget further. Cooking at your shared house instead of buying meals out cuts your biggest daily expense. Buying second-hand textbooks from senior students, or borrowing from the library, avoids full retail prices on required reading. Splitting transport costs with housemates who take the same kombi route each day also adds up over a semester.
Getting around
Kombis, shared minibus taxis that run fixed routes between towns and campuses, are the standard way students get around. You pay per trip rather than a flat fare, and kombis are considerably cheaper than a private taxi for the same journey. If you live within walking distance of campus, particularly around Kwaluseni or Luyengo, walking or cycling for short trips saves the fare entirely.
Campus and social life
The Student Representative Council (SRC) at UNESWA organizes student welfare matters and oversees the range of clubs and societies students can join, from sports teams to cultural and faith-based groups. At church-affiliated institutions like SANU and EMCU, religious societies and chapel activities are a bigger part of weekly campus life than at UNESWA.
Eswatini's major cultural events, including the Umhlanga Reed Dance and the Incwala ceremony, fall during the academic year, and many students travel home to take part or to visit family during these periods. Plan around these dates when scheduling personal travel or budgeting for transport home.
