Getting a study visa is not the end of the compliance work. You must keep attending classes, keep passing enough units, and stay enrolled full time, or your institution reports you to immigration.
🇬🇧 UK: sponsors must report low attendance, withdrawal or suspension to the Home Office within 10 working days.
🇦🇺 Australia: condition 8202 requires satisfactory course progress, usually passing at least 50% of units each study period, plus attendance your provider sets, commonly around 80%.
🇨🇦 Canada: you must stay enrolled and actively pursuing studies each semester. Authorized leave cannot exceed 150 days.
Non-compliance reported to immigration can lead to visa cancellation, not only a warning from your school.
The visa is not a one-time approval
A study visa comes with ongoing conditions you must keep meeting for the entire length of your course, not only at the visa interview or arrival check. Universities and colleges act as sponsors or reporting bodies for the government, so your attendance and academic record feed directly into your immigration file.
The specific rules differ by destination, but the pattern is the same everywhere: stay enrolled full time, keep attending, keep passing enough of your units, and let your institution know before anything changes. Miss any of these and your provider is required to tell immigration, often within days.
United Kingdom
Your Student visa conditions require you to attend the classes, lectures, tutorials and practical sessions your course lists as compulsory. Engagement monitoring covers lectures, seminars, workshops, labs and any supervised activity your institution schedules.
Your university, as your visa sponsor, must report specified changes in your circumstances to the Home Office through the Sponsor Management System, and most changes need reporting within 10 working days. This includes if you suspend or withdraw from studies, complete early, fail to register, or are repeatedly absent to the point your institution excludes you. Falling below your institution's attendance threshold does not curtail your visa automatically. It triggers a report, and repeated or serious non-compliance is what leads the Home Office to curtail your visa and, in some cases, order you to leave.
Australia
Condition 8202 attaches to every student visa (subclass 500) and covers three things: staying enrolled in a registered course at the same or higher Australian Qualifications Framework level as your Confirmation of Enrolment, satisfying course progress requirements, and maintaining satisfactory attendance.

Canada
As a study permit holder, you must enrol at the designated learning institution (DLI) named on your permit and remain enrolled there, and you must actively pursue your program. Actively pursuing studies means you stay enrolled full time or part time in every academic semester, excluding scheduled breaks, and you make real progress toward completing your courses.
IRCC allows an authorized leave of up to 150 days and still counts you as actively pursuing your studies, but going beyond that puts your status at risk. It can weaken future immigration applications and, in serious cases, lead to enforcement action and removal from Canada.
If you have already fallen behind
Do not wait for a formal report to reach immigration before you act. Go to your international student office as soon as you notice low attendance or a failed unit, and ask what remediation options exist, such as a study plan, a reduced load with approval, or extra support for the next study period.
Institutions generally prefer to help you get back on track over reporting you, since a report creates work for them too. Acting early, before your provider is required to notify the government, is consistently the difference between a manageable warning and a visa problem.
Practical steps to stay compliant
Check your specific attendance and progress thresholds with your institution's international office, since these vary by course even within the same country.
Tell your school before you fall behind, not after. Providers have more flexibility to record an approved leave than to undo an already-filed non-compliance report.
Keep copies of every enrolment confirmation, attendance record and academic transcript. You need these if you ever have to explain a gap to immigration.
