StudentAid BC Grants Explained: Which Ones Stack With Your Loan and Which Replace It

Most StudentAid BC grants are automatic: apply for your loan and the system assesses you for them at the same time, no extra paperwork. A few, like the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program and disability equipment funding, need a separate request. Grants reduce how much you need to borrow, they don't replace the loan application itself.
💵 B.C. Access Grant: up to $4,000 per 8-month year for programs under 2 years, up to $1,000 for longer programs
💵 Canada Student Grant (Full-Time): up to $525 a month, or $4,200 for a standard 8-month year, through July 31, 2027
🎓 Disability grants stack automatically once your disability status is verified
📩 The Provincial Tuition Waiver Program, for youth from government care, needs its own application
Loan forgiveness programs work after graduation, they don't add money while you're in school
Grants StudentAid BC assesses automatically
Apply for a full-time or part-time student loan through StudentAid BC and the system checks you for several grants at the same time, with no separate form. The main one is the B.C. Access Grant . For full-time programs under 2 years, it pays up to $4,000 per 8-month school year, up to $117.65 a week of study. For programs of 2 years or more, it caps at $1,000 per 8-month year, up to $29.41 a week. You need at least $1 of assessed financial need and must attend a B.C. public post-secondary institution. It's non-repayable and pays out through the National Student Loans Service Centre alongside your loan.
Federal grants layer on top
The Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students is assessed the same way, automatically, when you apply for your loan. The base rate is up to $375 a month, or $3,000 for a standard 8-month year. A temporary 40% top-up, running until July 31, 2027, raises that to up to $525 a month, or $4,200 for the year. You need to qualify for a federal student loan, fall at or below the federal income threshold for your family size, and study at a public or not-for-profit institution in a program of at least 2 years leading to a degree, certificate, or diploma.
Disability grants also come without a separate application
Once your disability status is verified with StudentAid BC, you're automatically assessed for the B.C. Access Grant for Students with Disabilities, the B.C. Access Grant for Deaf Students, the B.C. Supplemental Bursary for Students with Disabilities, the B.C. Assistance Program for Students with Disabilities, and the Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities. None need extra paperwork beyond confirming your disability status through StudentAid BC's process.
One disability grant is the exception
The Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Disabilities doesn't come automatically. Request it through your school's accessibility services office using separate Equipment Request and Services Request forms, because it covers specific items and supports rather than a flat amount.
Grants that need their own application
The Provincial Tuition Waiver Program is the clearest example. It waives domestic tuition and eligible fees for students adopted through the B.C. Ministry of Children and Family Development or an Indigenous Child and Family Service Agency, or who spent time in B.C. government care, including specific thresholds around age 19 or 730 days in care. First-time applicants download and complete an application form, submit it to their financial aid office, and StudentAid BC verifies time-in-care with the relevant ministry, a process that takes up to 6 weeks. Once approved, you don't reapply for future years of eligible study. It pairs with the Learning for Future Grant, worth $3,500 per program year.
None of these carry over automatically each year
You reapply for StudentAid BC funding every school year, and every grant listed here gets reassessed as part of that same annual application, not carried forward from the year before. The B.C. Access Grant and Canada Student Grant get reassessed automatically each time, based on that year's income and course load. The Provincial Tuition Waiver Program is the exception once approved: it does not need reapplication for future years of eligible study, but you still confirm your enrolment and eligible status through your regular annual application.
What stacks and what replaces
| Program | Application | How it works with your loan |
|---|---|---|
| B.C. Access Grant | Automatic | Stacks, reduces amount you need to borrow |
| Canada Student Grant (Full-Time) | Automatic | Stacks, reduces amount you need to borrow |
| Disability grants (Access, Supplemental, Assistance) | Automatic once disability verified | Stacks on top of the above |
| Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment | Separate request via your school | Covers specific costs, not general living expenses |
| Provincial Tuition Waiver Program | Separate application, one time | Waives tuition, stacks with other grants |
| B.C. Loan Forgiveness Program | Applied for after graduation | Forgives loan balance instead of adding funding upfront |
Loan forgiveness is a different category entirely
The B.C. Loan Forgiveness Program doesn't pay out while you're studying. It reduces or eliminates your remaining loan balance after graduation, tied to eligible public service work. It functions as a repayment-stage benefit, not an in-school grant, since it never touches your funding package before you finish your program.
The practical takeaway
Complete your StudentAid BC application fully and honestly and most grants you qualify for get applied without extra effort. The exceptions are tied to a specific circumstance, disability equipment needs or time in government care, which need documentation only you or your school can provide.
Why the automatic versus separate split matters for planning
Budget around the automatic grants as soon as you get your notice of assessment, since the B.C. Access Grant and Canada Student Grant numbers are locked in at that point. Budget around the separate-application programs only after you have actually submitted the extra paperwork and received confirmation, since a Provincial Tuition Waiver Program approval can take up to 6 weeks and an equipment request depends on your school's accessibility office timeline, not StudentAid BC's standard processing.
