Studienkolleg and the Feststellungspruefung: What Canadian Students Without Direct Entry Must Do
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 19, 2026 • Canadians Studying Abroad
Studienkolleg is a one-year preparatory program that gets Canadian students without direct entry ready for a German bachelor's degree. You pick one of five tracks based on your intended major, then pass the Feststellungsprüfung, a final exam in German and your subject area, to move on.
🎓 Five tracks: T (technical/science), M (medicine/biology), W (business/economics), G (humanities), S (language)
⏱️ Program runs about two semesters, roughly one year
Passing the Feststellungsprüfung is required to start your degree program
Apply through uni-assist or directly to the Studienkolleg
What Studienkolleg does
Studienkolleg closes the one-year gap between a standard Canadian Grade 12 diploma and Germany's Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, the university entrance qualification German students earn through the Abitur. If your province's diploma does not qualify for direct entry, Studienkolleg is your route in. You spend two semesters studying subjects tied to your intended degree, taught partly or fully in German, alongside intensive German language instruction.
Studienkolleg attaches to a German university or runs as a standalone institution, and admission there does not guarantee admission to the university you apply to afterward for your degree. Treat it as a separate application step with its own deadlines.
The five tracks and how to pick one
Every Studienkolleg groups students into a track (Kurs) tied to a future field of study. Choose the track matching your intended degree before you start, since switching later usually means restarting the year.
| Track | Focus | Leads to |
|---|---|---|
| T-Kurs | Mathematics, physics, engineering | Engineering, computer science, technical degrees |
| M-Kurs | Biology, chemistry, physics | Medicine, pharmacy, biology, dentistry |
| W-Kurs | Economics, business, statistics | Business administration, economics, social sciences |
| G-Kurs | German, history, literature | Humanities, law, languages |
| S-Kurs | Languages | Language and literature degrees |
Check your intended university's degree page against these tracks before you enrol. A mismatch between your Studienkolleg track and your later degree application blocks admission at most universities.
German language level before you start
Most Studienkolleg programs expect German at B1 level on entry and push toward C1 by the end, since courses run mostly in German. Some Studienkollegs run an intensive preparatory German course before the academic year starts for students below that level. Confirm the exact language requirement with the individual Studienkolleg, since it varies by institution, according to DAAD .
How to apply
Submit your Canadian transcripts and diploma through uni-assist for evaluation, the same process required for direct university applications.
Apply to the Studienkolleg attached to your target university, or to a standalone Studienkolleg if your target university does not run its own.
Some Studienkollegs set entrance tests or interviews before offering a seat, especially for oversubscribed tracks like M-Kurs.
Public Studienkollegs run tuition free outside Baden-Württemberg. Private ones charge fees that vary widely, so compare a public seat first.
Timing your application
German universities run two intakes: the winter semester starting in October and the summer semester starting in April. Studienkolleg programs align with these dates, so apply at least six months ahead of your intended start. Popular tracks like T-Kurs and M-Kurs fill fast in cities with several universities. Build the Studienkolleg year into your overall degree timeline from Canada before you count total years to graduation.
English-taught programs do not skip this requirement
Choosing an English-taught bachelor's program in Germany does not remove the Studienkolleg requirement. The rule is about whether your prior qualification meets the Hochschulzugangsberechtigung standard, not about the language your future courses run in. A Canadian applicant without direct entry still needs Studienkolleg, or an equivalent recognized pathway, before starting an English-taught degree.
The Feststellungsprüfung
The Feststellungsprüfung is the assessment exam at the end of Studienkolleg. It tests German language ability plus the subjects tied to your track: a T-Kurs student sits exams in math and physics, an M-Kurs student sits biology and chemistry, and so on. A passing grade earns you the Hochschulzugangsberechtigung equivalent needed to apply to a bachelor's program.
Failing the Feststellungsprüfung does not always end your path. Many Studienkollegs allow one resit, though a second failure typically closes that route at that institution. Ask about the resit policy and pass rate for your specific track when you apply, since these figures differ by Studienkolleg and are not centrally published.
Once you pass, your Feststellungsprüfung result functions as your Hochschulzugangsberechtigung for German university applications. You then apply to your bachelor's program through uni-assist or directly to the university, depending on the program.
How grading works
German exams grade on a scale from 1 (best) to 6 (fail). A Feststellungsprüfung pass generally needs an average around 4.0 across your subject exams, though the exact passing formula and any minimum per-subject grade differ by Studienkolleg and track. Ask your Studienkolleg for its specific grading breakdown at the start of the year so you know what score to target in each subject well before exam season.
