Study Abroad Scholarships for Myanmar Students: Programs Worth Applying To

Chevening Scholarship (United Kingdom)

Chevening funds a one-year master's degree at any UK university, covering tuition, a monthly stipend, and return airfare. Myanmar sits on the list of eligible countries. To apply, you need an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master's, at least two years of work experience (2,800 hours), and a commitment to return to Myanmar for at least two years after the award ends. Applications open in August, and the 2026-27 cycle closes on 6 October 2026, so check the exact dates on the Chevening Myanmar page each year.

Australia Awards (Australia)

Australia Awards funds master's degrees for Myanmar applicants, and priority fields for the 2026 intake include education, public health, human rights and democratic governance, gender equality and social inclusion, environment and natural resources, and economic development. You need an IELTS Academic score of at least 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, taken after 30 April 2025, or an equivalent TOEFL or PTE score. Applicants who score at least 6.0 overall with no sub-band below 5.5 at interview stage receive English language training before starting. You must be at least 18 by 1 February of the year the scholarship starts. Full details sit on the Australia Awards Myanmar site .

MEXT Scholarship (Japan)

Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) scholarship covers tuition, a monthly stipend and a round-trip ticket to Japan. It runs four tracks: research student, undergraduate, college of technology, and specialized training college. In Myanmar, applications go through the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) in Yangon before they reach the Japanese embassy, and the window for the 2027 intake opened in April and closed in May. Check the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar page each year for that year's exact dates.

Global Korea Scholarship (South Korea)

GKS funds both undergraduate and graduate study in South Korea, and Myanmar sits on the list of eligible countries. Graduate applicants need a bachelor's or master's degree already completed and a GPA of at least 80 percent from their most recent program. You apply through only one track or university. Applying to more than one gets your application cancelled. For the 2026 intake, applications opened online through Study in Korea from 12 to 25 February 2026, either through the embassy track or directly through a partner university.

Chinese Government Scholarship, CSC (China)

CSC funds bachelor's, master's and PhD study in China, and Myanmar qualifies for the ASEAN track alongside the other nine ASEAN member states. Age limits run 18-25 for bachelor's, 18-35 for master's and 18-40 for PhD applicants. You apply online through the Campus China portal, list up to two universities through the embassy track, and results are usually announced by the end of July. Check the Chinese embassy in Myanmar for that year's application window, since it moves each cycle.

University scholarships

Beyond government-funded scholarships, individual universities run their own international student awards, from partial tuition waivers to full-ride packages for top applicants. Coverage and eligibility differ by university and by intake, so check the international admissions or scholarships page of each university on your shortlist directly, rather than relying on last year's figures.

How to build your scholarship shortlist

Apply to more than one program if you meet the eligibility bar, since each has a different deadline and a different selection process. Start your application documents, references and a draft personal statement 4-6 months before the deadline of your first-choice scholarship, so you have time to reuse and adapt them for the others.

Read the eligibility page of each scholarship directly before you invest time in an application, since GPA cut-offs, age limits, work experience requirements and bond conditions change from one intake to the next.
