Studying Medicine in Jordan as a Malaysian Student: What to Check Before Applying

A Narrower Field Than It Looks

Jordan has more than half a dozen universities offering medicine, but the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) recognises degrees from only two of them: the University of Jordan in Amman, and Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) in Irbid. If a Jordanian university outside these two offers you a place, the degree is not automatically covered for provisional registration in Malaysia, which is the first step toward practising as a doctor here after you graduate.

What MMC Recognises From Jordan

Both recognised universities sit under the Second Schedule of the Medical Act 1971 on MMC's list, meaning graduates can apply for provisional registration without extra qualifying steps tied to the degree's country of origin.

Notice that each university has two recognised degree titles added years apart, which reflects how universities sometimes rename or restructure their medical degree over time. If your offer letter names a degree title that does not match one of the entries above, confirm directly with MMC before accepting, since a slightly different program name from the same university is not automatically covered.

Studying Medicine in Amman or Irbid

Jordanian medical programmes at these two universities typically run around six years and are taught largely in English, which removes the language barrier that comes with medical study in several other Middle Eastern countries. Both universities run large, well-established teaching hospitals attached to their medical faculties, and both have long histories of training international students from across the Arab world and beyond.

Amman is Jordan's capital and largest city, with a higher cost of living than Irbid, a smaller city built around JUST's campus. Factor this into your budget alongside tuition, since accommodation and daily living costs differ meaningfully between the two locations.

Costs and Applying

Tuition for international students varies by university and program track, and changes over time, so get a current, written fee schedule directly from the university's international admissions office rather than relying on an agent's quote or an old forum post. Application generally runs through the university's international student office, with SPM or STPM results, English proficiency evidence, a passport, and a medical fitness certificate among the standard requirements. Confirm the current intake cycle and document checklist directly with the university, since requirements shift between years.

Before You Accept an Offer

Three checks matter more than the university's overall reputation: that your specific degree title appears on the current MMC recognised list, that the university is one of the two named above rather than another Jordanian medical school, and that you have a realistic living cost plan for either Amman or Irbid. Recognition lists get updated, so verify directly with MMC before you commit to six years of study and the fees that come with it.
