TL;DR

The T2202 is the official tuition certificate your school issues each year, showing eligible fees and months enrolled. Download it from your student portal and enter the total on Schedule 11 to claim the federal tuition tax credit.

  • 🎓 Available from your school's student portal or registrar, not mailed automatically

  • 💵 Only fees for a qualifying program totaling more than $100 in a year qualify for the certificate

  • 📩 The amount transfers to Schedule 11 on your tax return

  • ⏱️ Check the portal in late January or February, after your school finalizes the year's enrolment

What the T2202 Shows

The T2202, Tuition and Enrolment Certificate , is the document your college or university issues to report tuition fees you paid for eligible courses, along with the months you were enrolled full time or part time. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) uses it to support the tuition amount you claim on your return.

It lists your name, SIN, the institution's details, the program or courses covered, and a fee total broken down by academic period. It does not include textbooks or supplies, since those were removed from the federal credit calculation in earlier tax years and are not part of the current tuition amount.

Where to Get Yours

Canadian post-secondary institutions issue T2202s through the student's online account, usually the same portal used for grades and registration, rather than by mail. Log in, look for a Tax Forms or Tax Receipts section, and download the PDF once your school posts it for the year.

Schools typically post T2202s in late January or February, after the winter term's fees have posted to your account and the school has finalized enrolment months for the calendar year. If you cannot find it, check your registrar's office or student accounts webpage directly. Many schools post an FAQ explaining exactly where the download link lives.

The $100 Minimum

Your school issues a T2202 only for fees on a qualifying program that add up to more than $100 in a calendar year. A single short course with a small fee below that threshold will not generate its own certificate, even though the school still charged you for it.

The course also has to meet the CRA's definition of a qualifying program, generally a post-secondary level course at a designated educational institution. Ask your registrar if you are unsure whether a specific course or certificate program qualifies.

How It Feeds Into Your Return

Transfer the total eligible tuition amount from your T2202 onto Schedule 11 of your federal return. Schedule 11 calculates your current year federal tuition tax credit, and tracks any unused amount you carry forward or transfer to a parent, grandparent or spouse.

Most tax software auto-fills this once you connect to the CRA's auto-fill service, pulling in the T2202 your school already submitted electronically. Confirm the auto-filled number against your own copy of the certificate before you submit, since a school administrative error occasionally understates or duplicates an amount.

Part-Time vs Full-Time Months

The T2202 splits your enrolled months into full-time and part-time categories, which matters beyond the tuition credit itself. Full-time months affect other calculations tied to your return, including certain provincial benefits and scholarship exemption rules, so check that the box matches how your school actually classified your registration each term.

Studying Outside Canada

If you study at a foreign university on a full degree program, your school will not issue a Canadian T2202. You still claim a tuition credit for a foreign institution in certain cases, using different CRA documentation (form TL11A for a university outside Canada, or TL11C for commuting to the United States), rather than a T2202. Ask your foreign school's registrar whether they provide the equivalent Canadian tax form, since not all do.

If Something Looks Wrong

Contact your registrar's office directly if your T2202 is missing, shows a $0 balance despite fees you paid, or lists the wrong number of enrolled months. Schools correct and reissue T2202s regularly early in tax season once a wave of students flags errors, so do not assume the number is final without checking it against your own fee statement first.

Keep It With Your Records

Save a copy of every T2202 you receive, even in a year you owe no tax. If you carry the tuition amount forward or transfer it to a parent, that original certificate is the backup document for the claim, sometimes requested years later, and school portals do not always keep old years accessible after you graduate.
