Teacher Scholarship Bonds in Thailand: ทุนครูรัก(ษ์)ถิ่น, ทุนคุรุทายาท and Rural Placement

Thailand runs several bonded scholarships that pay a full teacher-training degree in exchange for years of service at a small, often rural, school. ครูรัก(ษ์)ถิ่น is the largest active one today, funding around 160,000 baht a year and requiring at least 6 years teaching in your home area after graduation.

⏱️ Bond: at least 6 years teaching at a small school in your home area after graduating.
📩 Graduates get appointed directly as civil-service teachers, no separate job search needed.
คุรุทายาท was the historical precursor program from the 1980s that started Thailand's bonded teacher-training model.
Why Thailand bonds teacher scholarships
Small schools in remote parts of Thailand struggle to keep teachers, since new graduates often prefer to work near cities. Rather than only raising pay, Thailand's government and the Equitable Education Fund (กสศ., EEF) fund the training of teachers who already come from those remote communities, on the idea that graduates who grew up locally are more likely to stay. In exchange for a fully paid teaching degree, recipients agree to return and teach in their home district for a fixed number of years.
ครูรัก(ษ์)ถิ่น (Kru Rak Thin)
ครูรัก(ษ์)ถิ่น, sometimes written Kru Rak Thin, is the main active bonded teacher scholarship in Thailand today, run by กสศ. It targets upper-secondary graduates from low-income families in remote areas who want to become teachers, with a focus on early childhood and primary education. Selected students study at one of Thailand's partner teacher-training universities, approximately 15 institutions nationwide as of the program's sixth intake round for the 2569 (2026) academic year, according to กสศ.
Funding runs to about 160,000 baht a year per student, made up of roughly 40,000 baht a year for tuition, 2,000 baht a month for housing, 6,000 baht a month for living costs, and 2,000 baht a month for books and learning materials. On finishing the degree, graduates are appointed directly as civil-service teachers, placed at small schools in remote areas close to their home community rather than sent through a general open hiring round.
Who can apply and how
Applicants must be upper-secondary graduates (or final-year M.6 students at time of application) from families with limited income, living in or connected to a remote or underserved area, with an interest in teaching young children. Selection combines academic records, a household income check, and interviews or activities designed to assess genuine interest in the teaching profession rather than academic score alone. กสศ. opens applications once a year, usually toward the end of the calendar year for the following academic year's intake, through its own site and the partner universities' admission offices.
The bond
After appointment, ครูรัก(ษ์)ถิ่น graduates must teach at their assigned rural school for at least 6 years. This is longer than a typical civil-service probation period, reflecting how much the government invests per student across a full teacher-training degree plus living support. Earlier cohorts of the program have already reached this stage, with hundreds of graduates placed into permanent teaching posts under the scheme. Throughout the degree, students also take part in community-based activities in their home district, meant to build ties with the school they will eventually return to rather than leaving that connection until after graduation.
คุรุทายาท and the wider Teacher Production for Local Development framework
คุรุทายาท (Kuru Thayat) is the historical program that started Thailand's bonded teacher-training model, launched during the country's 6th National Economic and Social Development Plan (พ.ศ. 2530-2534, roughly 1987-1991). It selected students with strong grades and a genuine interest in teaching for placement in teacher-training institutes, capped at no more than 15 percent of that year's vacant teaching posts, with support for housing, tuition and professional development activities alongside classroom study.
The model behind คุรุทายาท carried forward into what is now grouped under the Teacher Production for Local Development project, which ran an initial phase from 2559 to 2561 (2016-2018) before being folded into Thailand's longer national education reform plan covering 2562 to 2572 (2019-2029). ครูรัก(ษ์)ถิ่น operates as the current, most visible version of this same idea: recruit locally, train fully funded, and place graduates back where they came from.
Who should consider these routes
These scholarships fit a student who is genuinely committed to teaching as a career and comfortable staying in or returning to a rural home area for several years after graduation. They are a poor fit for anyone who only wants a funded degree without the intention of teaching, since leaving before completing the bond period typically means repaying the scholarship. If you are from a remote province and want to become a teacher, check กสศ.'s annual recruitment announcement for the current intake round and its list of partner universities before the application window closes.
