Testing Accommodations for Students With Disabilities on the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and MCAT

TL;DR

Every major grad and professional test offers accommodations like extended time, extra breaks, and assistive technology, but each testing body has its own portal, documentation rules, and deadline. Apply as early as you can since some reviews take weeks and accommodations cannot be added once you have an appointment. Documentation should focus on your current functional limitations, not just a diagnosis.

  • 📩 GRE: request through ETS's disability services process with ADAAA-recognized documentation

  • 📩 GMAT: apply through mba.com before scheduling, since accommodations cannot be added to an existing appointment

  • ⏱️ LSAT: request deadline matches the registration deadline with no exceptions; appeals decided within about a week

  • 📩 MCAT: AAMC evaluates current functional limitations, not diagnosis alone, through its Testing Services portal

Testing Accommodations for Students With Disabilities on the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and MCAT

A shared approach, different portals

The GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and MCAT each run a separate accommodations process, but they share a common structure: you submit documentation of a disability or health-related need, request specific accommodations, and wait for a decision before you schedule or lock in your test date. None of the four let you add accommodations to an appointment you already booked, so apply first and schedule after approval.

GRE accommodations

ETS accepts requests for documented disabilities or health-related needs recognized under the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act. You download the relevant test bulletin and supplement for exact submission instructions, and ETS keeps your diagnosis and medical information confidential, stating it will not release that information without your informed written consent.

GMAT accommodations

To request GMAT accommodations , first read the GMAT Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities, then create an mba.com account and submit documentation matched to your disability type through the Apply for Accommodations button. If you have already gone through a review for another standardized test requesting 50% extra time or extra rest breaks, a confirmation of prior accommodations review form may satisfy the documentation requirement.

Approved GMAT accommodations include extended time, additional rest breaks, medical devices in the testing room, reader or recorder services, enlarged font display, adjustable screen contrast, and sign language interpreter access. Because accommodations cannot be changed or added once you have an appointment, submit your request and wait for approval before you book a test date. Direct questions to testingaccommodations@gmac.com.

LSAT accommodations

LSAC requires accommodation requests through JD Services, with email submission to accom@LSAC.org only as a backup for technical problems. The request deadline matches the standard LSAT registration deadline, and LSAC states there are no exceptions to that date, so build in time before you plan to apply.

Possible accommodations include extended time, alternative formats, extra breaks, human readers, and assistive technology, though LSAC describes this as a non-exhaustive list and directs applicants to review its full specifications page for your specific situation. LSAC reviews requests as quickly as possible, and appeal decisions typically come within about a week of submission.

MCAT accommodations

AAMC evaluates MCAT accommodation requests through its centralized Testing Services portal. The organization is explicit that your current functional limitations in relation to standardized test-taking, not your diagnosis alone, determine which accommodations fit your request, so documentation should describe how your condition affects test performance specifically.

Review AAMC's Review Cycles and Important Dates page for submission deadlines tied to your intended test date, and reach out to MCAT Accommodations Services at accommodations@aamc.org or 202-828-0600, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET, if you need help navigating the process.

Planning around review time

None of the four testing bodies guarantee a fast turnaround, and some reviews take several weeks depending on your documentation and the complexity of your request. Start your accommodations request as soon as you know you plan to test, well before you pick a specific test date, so a slow review does not force you into a tighter prep timeline or a missed application deadline.
