TETFund Academic Staff Training and Development Sponsorship for Nigerian Lecturers

By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Graduate & Professional School

TL;DR

TETFund's Academic Staff Training and Development (AST&D) sponsorship pays for Nigerian polytechnic, college of education and university staff to pursue Masters and Doctoral degrees. In return, you sign a bond to return and serve your institution afterward.

  • 🎓 Open to academic staff already employed at eligible Nigerian public tertiary institutions

  • 📩 You apply through your own institution's staff development office, not directly to TETFund

  • ⏱️ Introduced in 2008 to reduce in-breeding, where staff earn all their degrees from the same institution that employs them

  • You must complete your bond period from a Masters sponsorship before applying for Doctoral sponsorship

What AST&D sponsorship is

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) runs the Academic Staff Training and Development (AST&D) intervention to sponsor Masters and Doctoral study for academic staff at Nigerian public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. TETFund introduced the program in 2008 specifically to break the pattern of academic in-breeding, where lecturers earn every degree from the same institution where they teach, which limits the spread of ideas and methods across the Nigerian higher education system.

Because AST&D targets staff development rather than open recruitment, you cannot apply as a member of the public. You must already hold an academic staff appointment at a participating Nigerian public tertiary institution before you become eligible to apply for sponsorship to pursue further study.

How the application works

Applications run through your own institution rather than directly through TETFund. Your university, polytechnic or college of education collects nominations from its academic staff, screens them against TETFund's eligibility rules, and submits its shortlist to TETFund for funding approval and disbursement. Contact your institution's staff development or human resources office to find out when the current nomination window is open, since institutions set their own internal deadlines ahead of TETFund's overall cycle.

You typically need a letter of admission to a Masters or Doctoral program, confirmation of your academic staff status, and departmental or institutional endorsement as part of your nomination.

The bond obligation

AST&D sponsorship comes with a bond. As a beneficiary, you commit to returning to your sponsoring institution and serving out an agreed period after you finish your degree, rather than taking your TETFund-funded qualification straight to another employer.

If you want to progress from a TETFund-sponsored Masters to a TETFund-sponsored Doctorate, you must complete the bond period tied to your Masters sponsorship first, since a nominee who benefited from Masters funding cannot apply for Doctoral sponsorship until that earlier bond has run its course.

Exact bond length and any penalty for breaking it are set out in your institution's TETFund nomination agreement, so confirm the specific terms with your staff development office before you sign rather than assuming a fixed figure applies to every institution.

Where you can study

AST&D sponsorship funds study at Nigerian universities or at institutions outside Nigeria, depending on your field and your institution's guidelines for that cycle, since TETFund also runs a related Foreign Training intervention alongside AST&D for staff whose specialization requires study abroad. Confirm with your institution which route applies to your discipline before you finalize an admission offer, since local and foreign sponsorship carry different documentation and cost ceilings.

Who benefits

AST&D exists to raise the qualification profile of Nigeria's higher education workforce, since institutions need PhD-holding staff to meet National Universities Commission and National Board for Technical Education staffing benchmarks. If you are early in an academic career at a Nigerian public institution and want to move from a Masters to a Doctorate, or from a first degree into academia through a Masters, AST&D is usually a stronger route than self-funding, provided you accept the multi-year return-and-serve commitment attached to it.
