How Thai Students Apply to NUS, NTU and SMU as International Undergraduates

By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Study in Southeast Asia

TL;DR

Thai students apply to NUS, NTU and SMU separately, since Singapore's three biggest universities do not share a common application. Each evaluates A-level or equivalent grades on its own terms, and Thai citizens qualify for scholarships like the NUS ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship, which covers tuition plus a living allowance in exchange for a work bond in Singapore.

  • 🎓 No shared application: apply separately to NUS, NTU and SMU

  • A good pass in at least three A-level subjects gets your NUS application considered

  • NTU asks for A-level Mathematics or Further Mathematics for Engineering and most Science programs

  • 💵 NUS ASEAN Scholarship: full tuition plus S$5,800 a year living allowance

  • 📩 Accepting the scholarship's MOE Tuition Grant means a 3-year work bond in Singapore

  • SMU weighs an interview or written assessment alongside grades for most programs

How Thai Students Apply to NUS, NTU and SMU as International Undergraduates

No Common Application

NUS, NTU and SMU each run a separate application system. You apply to each university on its own portal, pay each application fee separately, and track each decision independently. Applying to one does not put your file in front of the other two, so decide early which universities fit your intended course and start each application on its own timeline.

Academic Requirements

All three universities accept Thai students holding A-levels, the International Baccalaureate, or other recognized international qualifications. NUS states that a good pass in at least three Advanced Level subjects is required to submit an application, with grades from up to two exam sessions and two exam boards accepted within a 12-month window. Programs like Medicine, Dentistry and Law close earlier than the general deadline, and you generally need your exam results finished before that earlier date.

NTU asks for at least three GCE A-level subjects taken within 12 months across no more than two sittings, and requires A-level Mathematics or Further Mathematics for Engineering and most Science programs. If you hold a different qualification, such as Malaysian STPM, Indian Standard 12, or Hong Kong DSE, NTU accepts many of these directly or asks for supplementary Advanced Placement scores alongside them.

SMU weighs your academic record alongside an interview or written assessment for most programs, reflecting its smaller, discussion-based undergraduate model. Strong English and quantitative reasoning help across all three universities, since SMU's business and social science programs test both directly.

Scholarships for Thai Students

Thai citizens, as ASEAN nationals excluding Singapore, qualify for the NUS ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship . It covers full subsidized tuition through Singapore's MOE Tuition Grant, a S$5,800 yearly living allowance, a one-time S$1,750 computer allowance at enrollment, and a S$3,000 annual accommodation allowance. Selection interviews run from January to July, with results out by mid-July.

The scholarship itself carries no separate bond, but accepting the MOE Tuition Grant requires three years of work at a Singapore-registered company after graduation. Medicine graduates commit to six years of service with Singapore's Ministry of Health, and Dentistry graduates to five years. To renew the award each semester, students maintain a GPA of at least 3.50 or the equivalent, plus good conduct.

NTU and SMU also participate in Singapore's MOE Tuition Grant Scheme for eligible international students, which lowers subsidized tuition in exchange for the same work-bond structure. Scholarship names and amounts differ by university and change year to year, so check each university's financial aid office for the merit scholarships currently open to Thai applicants before you commit to a bond.

Application Timeline

International application windows for NUS, NTU and SMU typically open in the preceding year and close between February and March for an August intake. Some programs, particularly Medicine, Dentistry and Law, close earlier than the general deadline. Confirm the exact date for your intake year directly on each university's admissions page, since dates shift annually.

Building a Strong Application

  • Take Mathematics and a relevant science subject at A-level if you plan to apply for engineering or computing

  • Prepare for interviews well ahead of deadlines, especially for Medicine, Law and SMU programs

  • Gather transcripts and predicted or final grades early, since processing from Thai schools takes time

  • Apply to all three universities if your budget allows, since admission is competitive for international seats

Housing and Student Pass

International students at NUS, NTU and SMU choose between on-campus halls of residence, which fill up fast and often prioritize freshmen, and private rentals near campus. Apply for campus housing as soon as your offer confirms rather than waiting until closer to the semester. Once admitted, your university guides you through Singapore's Student's Pass application with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) , a requirement for full-time study that runs alongside, not instead of, your university enrollment.

Cost of Living in Singapore

Singapore costs more day to day than Bangkok or most other Thai cities, particularly for rent, transport and eating out. Budgeting for a Singapore degree means planning for tuition, which is heavily subsidized for scholarship holders through the MOE Tuition Grant, plus a realistic monthly living budget that covers rent, food, transport and course materials. If a scholarship does not fully cover your costs, factor in savings or family support for the gap, since part-time work options for international students in Singapore are limited by visa rules during term time.

Weighing the Three Universities

NUS suits students who want the widest range of majors and the deepest research reputation in the region. NTU fits students focused on engineering, applied science or communication, with strong industry links in those fields. SMU suits students who prefer a smaller, seminar-style environment and want business, economics, law or computing with heavy emphasis on discussion and case work.
