Your UK Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) stays valid for 6 months, and you must apply for your visa in that window before your course starts. You need to show £1,529 a month for study in London or £1,171 a month outside London, for up to 9 months, held for 28 days in a row.
📩 CAS must be issued no more than 6 months before you apply for entry clearance
💵 London: £1,529 a month, up to 9 months, £13,761 total
💵 Outside London: £1,171 a month, up to 9 months, £10,539 total
⏱️ Funds held for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of your application date
🏠 Deduct tuition and up to £1,529 in accommodation fees already paid to your school
What Your CAS Is and When You Should Expect It
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is a digital reference number your UK university issues once you accept an unconditional offer and meet its conditions. You cannot apply for a Student visa without one. Request your CAS only after you have chosen the institution you plan to attend, because UKCISA confirms that any other CAS you hold becomes invalid the moment you accept a place.
Under Immigration Rules Appendix Student , your CAS must be issued no more than 6 months before the date you apply for entry clearance from Thailand. You also cannot apply for entry clearance more than 6 months before your course start date. Work backward from your intake date: if your program starts in September, your university should issue the CAS from around March onward, and you should submit your visa application soon after so the CAS does not expire before you use it.
The Financial Requirement: How Much to Show
Alongside the CAS, you must prove you can cover living costs for up to 9 months of your course. The amount depends on where you study. Gov.uk sets the rate at £1,529 a month if your school is in London and £1,171 a month everywhere else in the UK.
| Location | Monthly amount | Maximum 9 month total |
|---|---|---|
| Inner or outer London | £1,529 | £13,761 |
| Outside London | £1,171 | £10,539 |
You only need to cover the maintenance amount. Course fees are shown separately on your CAS, and you can subtract any tuition you already paid your university, plus up to £1,529 for accommodation you already paid for, from your total.
The 28 Day Rule for Your Bank Statement
UK Visas and Immigration checks that your money was genuinely available, not deposited the day before you applied. Your bank statement, or your parents' or sponsor's statement if they fund you, must show the required balance held continuously for 28 days in a row. The balance cannot drop below the amount you need at any point during that period.
The closing date on the statement must fall within 31 days of the date you submit your visa application. Thai students sending funds from a Thai bank should request an official statement or letter on bank letterhead, since UKVI accepts printed statements only when they carry the bank's stamp or come as an original document, not a screenshot.
Building Your Timeline From CAS to Visa Decision
Once you have your CAS and your bank statement covers the 28 day requirement, submit your online application and book your biometric appointment at a UK visa application centre in Thailand. Standard processing from Thailand runs around 3 weeks, though you should check current processing times on your application confirmation before booking flights or accommodation deposits.
Budget for the Immigration Health Surcharge as well, paid during your online application and calculated by the length of your course. Check the current IHS rate on gov.uk when you apply, since planning for tuition and living costs alone can leave a gap in your total visa budget.
Apply as soon as your CAS and finances are ready rather than waiting close to your course start date. A late decision can force you to defer enrollment, and UK universities generally will not hold a place indefinitely for a visa delay.
Documents to Prepare Alongside Your Bank Statement
Valid passport with at least one blank page
Your CAS reference number
Tuberculosis test results, required for applicants from Thailand under UK TB testing rules
Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate, if your course falls under a sensitive subject area
Proof of relationship to your sponsor, such as a birth certificate, if a parent funds your studies
Keep digital and printed copies of every document. Consular staff at the visa application centre process your biometrics separately from the decision, so bring originals rather than relying on scans stored on your phone.
Common Reasons Financial Evidence Gets Rejected
UKVI refuses funding evidence most often for three reasons: the balance dropped below the required amount at some point in the 28 day window, the statement's closing date falls outside the 31 day rule, or the document format does not meet UKVI's standard, for example a screenshot of online banking instead of a stamped or certified statement. Check every page of your statement against these three points before you submit, not just the final balance.
If your parents hold a joint account or a company account rather than a personal one, get a letter from the bank confirming you can use those funds, along with proof of your relationship to the account holder. A statement in a company name with no supporting letter linking it to your sponsor is a common, avoidable refusal reason.
Using a Loan Instead of Savings
An education loan from a government, government-sponsored or academic loans scheme counts as acceptable financial evidence as long as the loan letter states the amount sanctioned, confirms the funds are available to you, and is dated no more than 6 months before you apply. Loan sanction letters that only promise future disbursement, without confirming the amount is currently accessible, do not meet the same standard as a bank statement showing funds already in an account.
After Your Visa Is Approved
Once UKVI approves your application, you receive a decision letter and, depending on your route, either a Biometric Residence Permit to collect after arrival or a digital eVisa linked to your passport. Check your decision letter for the exact collection instructions and the deadline for entering the UK, since these details vary by application centre and by year. Register with a doctor and, if your course or nationality requires it, with the police, soon after you arrive, and keep your CAS and visa decision letter accessible during your first weeks in the UK in case your university or a government office asks to see them.
