Hamilton: McMaster's Lincoln Alexander Hall
McMaster University welcomes its first students into Lincoln Alexander Hall in Fall 2026. The building holds 1,366 spaces, all single rooms, making it the university's 15th residence and its largest to date. It includes communal kitchens on every floor, a fitness area, underground parking for 43 cars, long-term parking for 325 bicycles, and an intergenerational hub built with the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging that brings students and older adults from the surrounding community together. Mississauga: UTM's new residence
The University of Toronto Mississauga opens a new residence next to Oscar Peterson Hall in September 2026, its first new residence building since 2007. It adds 400 beds, split between 115 single rooms and 135 double rooms, plus 15 rooms for residence dons and support staff, taking UTM's total on-campus housing to roughly 2,000 spaces. North Vancouver: Capilano University's Treehouse
Capilano University opened Treehouse, its first-ever on-campus student housing, on June 29, 2026. The six-storey building holds 362 beds, including 12 accessible units, and serves mainly first and second-year students. A 250-seat dining hall opened alongside it. The building's name reflects input from the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), on whose territory the North Vancouver campus sits. London: Western University's University Drive and Platt's Lane residences
Western University adds about 1,000 beds across two new buildings targeted for September 2026: a residence for 700 first-year students on University Drive near the main Richmond Street entrance, and an apartment-style building for 300 upper-year and graduate students on Platt's Lane. Western announced the project in 2023, and construction on the University Drive building has run into delays tied to community consultation and relocating an existing clinic on the site. What is still coming after 2026
Not every announced project lands this year. Dalhousie University broke ground in 2026 on its first new residence in more than a decade, a 213-bed, 67 million dollar building in Halifax, though it does not open to students until Fall 2028. The University of British Columbia's Lower Mall Precinct in Vancouver is bigger still, over 1,500 beds, with construction starting in Fall 2026 and residents moving in across 2028 and 2029. What this means for your housing search
New beds do not fix a housing shortage the year they open. Demand for every building on this list already outstrips supply, so apply for residence as early as your university allows and keep an off-campus backup plan even in a city with a new building opening. Check each university's housing office directly for the exact application deadline and cost, since residence fees for the 2026-27 year vary widely by school and room type.
