Public universities: Lome, Kara, and Datcha
Universite de Lome is Togo's oldest and largest public university, founded in 1970 and organized into six faculties, five schools, and several institutes covering sciences, health, law, economics, and the humanities. Universite de Kara, opened in 2004 in the north, gives students an established public option outside the capital and is adding a pharmacy program for the 2026/27 academic year. Universite de Datcha, created in 2023, is Togo's newest public university and is still building out its full range of programs.

Registration fees have historically been set far below the real cost of a place, though you should confirm the current figure directly with the university rather than relying on older published numbers. Class sizes at public universities, particularly in first-year general faculties, run large given how many students each institution enrolls.
Private universities and institutes
Togo's private higher education sector includes business and administration schools such as Ecole Superieure des Affaires and the Institut africain d'administration et d'etudes commerciales, plus a Catholic university unit and various specialized institutes in IT, health, and management. Private institutions set their own tuition, admission timelines, and program mix, often with smaller class sizes and more contact with instructors than an oversubscribed public faculty.
The trade-off is cost. Private tuition runs above the public rate, and you take on more of the financial responsibility yourself or through your family. Before enrolling, confirm the institution holds state authorization and CAMES accreditation for the specific program you want, not only for the institution as a whole. An accredited institution with an unaccredited program still leaves you with a degree that is hard to use.
