The baccalaureate sets your options

Your path into a Tunisian public university starts with the baccalaureate. The section you sat (mathematics, experimental science, economics and management, letters, technical, IT or sport) and your overall average determine which degree programs you list as choices. A strong average in the right section opens competitive fields such as medicine, engineering or business. A weaker average or a different section limits you to fields with lower demand.

Apply through the national orientation portal, not each university

Tunisia does not use separate applications per university for public bachelor's entry. After the Ministry of Education publishes bac results, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research opens the national orientation portal , where every new bac holder submits ranked program choices. You must list a minimum of six choices, ranked by genuine preference, for the system to register them. Choices ranked low still count, so avoid listing a program you would refuse.

The ministry publishes an updated orientation guide every year, listing every available program, its entry section, required average range and number of seats. Read it before you submit choices, since program names and capacity change between cycles.

How placement works

A computer system ranks every applicant for each program by a score built mainly from the bac average, with extra weight on subjects relevant to that program. Seats go to the highest-ranked applicants until the program fills. This produces an effective cut-off score for each program at each university that shifts every year with the number of applicants and available places. Neither the ministry nor any school publishes fixed cut-offs in advance, so check the current guide instead of a past year's figures.

Different fields, different doors

Not every field follows the same route. A direct bachelor's program (licence fondamentale or licence appliquée) at a faculty or institute goes straight through the orientation portal. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy also place through the portal, but only bac holders with the highest averages reach these seats, since demand far outstrips capacity every cycle.

Engineering follows a two-step path for most students. You first enter a two-year preparatory institute (IPEI) through the orientation portal, then sit a national engineering entrance exam near the end of the second year to compete for a seat in an engineering school. A smaller number of engineering seats admit bac holders directly, again through the portal. Applied technology fields go through Instituts Supérieurs des Études Technologiques (ISET), which also place through the national system but usually ask for lower averages than faculties.

Timeline of the placement cycle

The exact calendar shifts slightly each year, but the structure repeats. In the 2026 cycle, students with distinction grades were placed in an early session running July 3 to 5, 2026 , with results published July 8, 2026. The general placement round for all other candidates ran July 27 to 31, 2026, with results published August 7, 2026. Results appear directly on the orientation portal against each applicant's account.

The licence-master-doctorat structure behind your choices

Tunisian public higher education follows the LMD structure: a licence takes three years, a master's takes two more, and a doctorate follows for research paths. Most licence programs split into two types. A licence fondamentale focuses on academic theory and usually leads toward a master's. A licence appliquée builds in a professional or technical focus, often with a work placement, and targets direct entry into the job market. The orientation guide marks each program with its type, so check this label against your own plans before you rank it high on your list.

Confirm your seat

Placement is not enrollment. Once the portal shows your assigned program, finalize your spot on the inscription.tn registration platform within the window given, upload your bac certificate and ID, and pay the registration fee. Missing the confirmation deadline costs you the seat.

Documents to have ready

Keep your original bac certificate, a copy of your national ID or passport, recent photos and proof of address ready before placement results appear. inscription.tn asks for these during confirmation, and delays in gathering them cost you time inside a short registration window.

If you miss every choice

Applicants who score below every program they listed, or who list too few real options, are not left without a path. The ministry runs supplementary and reorientation rounds after the main placement, opening remaining seats in less competitive programs. An accredited private university is another route, since it sets its own entry requirements and admits students outside the national portal timeline. Some students choose a preparatory or short-cycle institute for a year, then apply to transfer into a bachelor's program with a stronger academic record.
