UCAT for Medicine Applicants: How ASEAN Students Register and Prepare
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Admissions & Applications
UCAT tests three cognitive sections plus a Situational Judgement Test, and from 2025 both the UK and Australia/New Zealand versions dropped Abstract Reasoning. As an overseas candidate you pay £115 for UCAT UK or AUD 405 for UCAT ANZ, more than candidates testing inside the UK or ANZ.
🎓 Sections: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, scored 900-2700, plus a Situational Judgement Test scored Band 1-4.
📩 UCAT UK 2026: registration opens 20 May 2026, testing runs 13 July to 24 September 2026.
UCAT ANZ 2026: registration opens 16 February 2026, standard booking deadline 15 May 2026.
Book at a Pearson VUE test centre. Pearson VUE runs centres in over 130 countries, including several in Southeast Asia.
⏱️ Start practicing 8-12 weeks before your test date. Speed matters as much as raw knowledge.
What the UCAT tests
The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is a computer-based admissions test used by UK medical and dental schools, and a closely related version, UCAT ANZ, is used by universities in Australia and New Zealand. From 2025, both versions dropped the Abstract Reasoning subtest, leaving three cognitive sections: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Reasoning.
These are scored on a combined scale of 900 to 2700. A separate Situational Judgement Test measures how you respond to ethical and professional scenarios and is scored in bands from 1, the best, to 4 (UCAT Consortium ).
The three cognitive sections
Verbal Reasoning: reading passages and judging whether statements are true, false, or cannot tell.
Decision Making: interpreting graphs, tables, and logical arguments to reach a conclusion.
Quantitative Reasoning: solving numerical problems using data presented in charts, tables, and graphs, under strict time pressure.
Registering for UCAT UK
For the 2026 cycle, account registration opens 20 May 2026 and stays open until 16 September 2026. Test booking opens 23 June 2026, and the testing window runs from 13 July 2026 to 24 September 2026 (UCAT Consortium ).
The test costs £70 if you sit it inside the UK and £115 if you test overseas, which applies to most ASEAN candidates (UCAT Consortium ). Book a slot as soon as booking opens, since popular test centres and dates fill up fast, and your UCAT score must reach universities before the UCAS deadline for medicine and dentistry courses.
You sit the test at a Pearson VUE Professional Centre. Pearson VUE operates centres in more than 130 countries, including several in Southeast Asia, so most ASEAN applicants can test without traveling to the UK.
Use the official Pearson VUE locator during booking to confirm your nearest centre and available dates (UCAT Consortium ). Online proctored testing through OnVUE exists only for candidates who cannot reach any physical test centre or who need a disability accommodation, and it is not available in a short list of restricted countries.
Registering for UCAT ANZ
If you are applying to Australian or New Zealand medical or dental schools, register separately for UCAT ANZ, which shares the same test format but has its own account, fee, and testing window. For the 2026 cycle, registration opens 16 February 2026, and the standard booking deadline is 15 May 2026.
The fee is AUD 335 for candidates testing inside Australia or New Zealand and AUD 405 for candidates testing overseas, which covers most ASEAN test takers (UCAT ANZ Consortium ). Book and sit UCAT ANZ well ahead of each university's application deadline, since some Australian programs set earlier internal cutoffs than the official UCAT window.
How universities use your score
UK medical schools weight the UCAT differently from each other. Some set a minimum cognitive score threshold before reviewing your application further, others combine your UCAT score with your grades and personal statement, and some use it mainly to shortlist candidates for interview. Check each university's published UCAT policy on its own admissions page, since the same score can clear one school's threshold and fall short at another.
Your Situational Judgement Test band matters too. A Band 4 result can weaken an otherwise strong application even at schools that do not set a cognitive score cutoff.
How to prepare
Start with the free official question bank and practice tests on the UCAT website to learn the interface and timing before you touch paid resources.
Practice under strict time limits from the start. Each cognitive section gives you under 30 seconds per question on average, so speed matters as much as accuracy.
Review your mistakes by section, since Verbal Reasoning and Decision Making need different strategies from Quantitative Reasoning.
Take at least two full timed mock tests in the final two weeks so test-day pacing feels familiar before the real thing.
Book your test date for a point when you have finished school exams or major coursework, since UCAT preparation competes directly with study time.
Applying from an ASEAN school system
You register for the UCAT the same way regardless of your school curriculum, but confirm with each target university whether it wants additional documents alongside your UCAT score, such as a separate English test result. UK medical schools generally still require IELTS or an equivalent English test even from UCAT-based applicants who did not complete secondary school in an English-medium system, so plan for both tests in your application timeline rather than treating the UCAT as your only entry hurdle.
