What Clearing is for

Clearing is the UCAS service that matches unplaced applicants with university courses that still have open spots. You qualify for Clearing if you missed the grades your firm or insurance offer required, if you applied but received no offers at all, or if you are applying for the first time after the main UCAS deadline has passed.

Clearing opens at the start of July each year and stays open into October, according to UCAS . Most of the activity and most available vacancies appear from results day onward, when the largest group of unplaced applicants enters the system at once.

Results day 2026 and what happens next

A-level results day for 2026 falls on Thursday, 13 August, with grades released on the UCAS Hub from 8am, per UCAS's own published key dates. Scottish Higher results, on a separate national timetable, come out earlier, on Tuesday 4 August 2026.

If you meet your firm offer's conditions, your place is confirmed automatically and you do not need to do anything through Clearing. If you miss your firm offer but meet your insurance offer, that place confirms instead. Only if you miss both, or held no offer to begin with, do you move into Clearing.

4. Get a verbal offer from a university willing to take you, then add that choice through your UCAS Hub to make it official.

5. Confirm your place once the university formally accepts you through the system.

Universities run their own Clearing hotlines and often publish live vacancy updates on their admissions pages during the days right after results, since course spots can fill within hours on the busiest day. Calling directly, rather than relying only on the UCAS portal search, gives you a faster read on whether a course still has genuine capacity.

What happened to Adjustment

Adjustment used to let students who exceeded their firm offer's conditions look for a place at a different, more competitive university while still holding onto their original confirmed place as a safety net. UCAS discontinued Adjustment from 2022 entry onward, citing low take-up: most students who beat their grades chose to stick with their original firm choice rather than search for an alternative.

If you exceed your offer conditions now, the replacement mechanism is different. You can choose to release yourself into Clearing, which means giving up your confirmed place to search for another course, rather than holding both simultaneously the way Adjustment allowed. This is a real tradeoff: releasing yourself into Clearing means you no longer have your original place guaranteed while you search, so weigh it carefully before opting in.

Contact your firm-choice university's admissions team before releasing yourself into Clearing if you are unsure, since some universities offer informal flexibility, like switching to a related course within the same institution, without needing the formal Clearing route at all.

International applicants and Clearing

International applicants use Clearing through the same UCAS Hub process as UK-based applicants, searching vacancies and contacting universities directly. The main practical differences are timing pressures around visa applications and travel, since a Clearing place confirmed in mid-August leaves a compressed window before term starts, particularly if you need a Student visa arranged from outside the UK.

If you are applying from outside the UK and end up in Clearing, prioritize contacting universities with strong track records supporting international enrollment quickly, since visa sponsorship documentation (the CAS, Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) needs to be issued promptly to leave enough time for your visa application before term starts.

Before you commit to a Clearing place

• Check the course content and structure matches what you want to study, not only that a spot is open.

• Confirm accommodation availability, since Clearing places are often filled by students who did not plan around that specific university's campus.
