🎓 Submit your Graduate Route application before the cutoff to secure the full 2 years.
New dependants cannot join a Graduate Route visa holder anymore.
Only dependants who already held Student route permission can extend alongside you.
The government expects about 12,000 fewer graduate visa applications a year as a result.
What is changing
From January 1, 2027, the UK's Graduate Route visa, the post-study work visa open to international bachelor's and master's graduates, shortens from 2 years to 18 months. The change applies to applications submitted on or after that date . PhD graduates are not affected and keep the existing 3-year entitlement.
The Graduate Route lets international graduates stay and work in the UK without needing employer sponsorship for the duration of the visa. It does not change what graduates can do during that time: full-time or part-time work, self-employment, starting a business, or switching to a Skilled Worker visa once you find a sponsoring employer remain allowed.
Who keeps the current 2 years
If you complete your degree and submit your Graduate Route application before December 31, 2026 , you keep the full 2-year period under the current rules. This matters most for students finishing courses in late 2026, including many January 2026 master's starters who complete by December 2026. Students starting a course now that runs into 2027 or later will fall under the new 18-month rule regardless of when their course began, since the cutoff tracks your visa application date, not your enrollment date. Because visa processing and the switch from Student to Graduate status take time, apply as early as your course completion allows rather than waiting near the cutoff, so you are not caught out if your application takes longer to process than expected.
Dependants face new restrictions
The rule change also tightens dependant visas. New dependants cannot join a Graduate Route visa holder at all going forward. Only a partner or child who already held permission as a dependant under the Student route, before the graduate switches over, can apply to extend that dependant status into the Graduate Route. If you plan to bring a partner or children to the UK during your post-study work period, they need Student-route dependant status in place before you switch to the Graduate visa.
Why the government is cutting the route
Immigration minister Lord David Hanson said the change responds to data showing too many graduates are not moving into graduate-level jobs, the outcome the Graduate Route was designed to support. The Home Office expects the shorter route to cut roughly 12,000 graduate visa applications a year, alongside an estimated 23 million pounds less revenue from graduate visa fees and 27 million pounds less from student visa fees tied to reduced UK study demand. The reform sits inside a broader immigration white paper that also raises English-language requirements for Skilled Worker and other work visas, part of a wider push to tie visa routes more closely to employment outcomes rather than time spent studying in the UK.
What this means if you are planning to study in the UK
If post-study work time matters to your decision to study in the UK, factor the 18-month window into your planning for courses starting in 2026 or later, especially if your course finishes after December 2026. Confirm application timing directly with your university's international office and the Home Office before you commit, since transitional deadlines around visa policy changes get refined as the date approaches.
