UK Graduate Route Drops to 18 Months in 2027: Why Timing Your Application Matters Now

From January 1, 2027, the UK Graduate Route visa shortens from two years to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates. PhD graduates keep three years. Apply before that date and you get the full two years.
📩 Home Office announced the change on October 14, 2025 in a Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules
Applies to applications submitted on or after January 1, 2027
PhD and other doctoral graduates: unaffected, still get 3 years
Reason given: too many graduates were not moving into graduate-level jobs
⏱️ Finishing your degree in 2026: apply for the Graduate Route as soon as results are confirmed to lock in 2 years
What the October 2025 change does
On October 14, 2025, the UK Home Office published a Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules, HC 1333. It confirms the Graduate Route visa, the post study work permit for international graduates, drops from two years to 18 months for most graduates. The change applies to applications submitted on or after January 1, 2027. Read the rules on gov.uk .
The reform first appeared in the government's immigration white paper, Restoring Control over the Immigration System, published in May 2025. The Home Office links the shorter length to data showing many Graduate Route holders were not moving into graduate-level employment, the outcome the route exists to support, according to ICEF Monitor .
Who keeps the current length and who gets 18 months
Application timing decides your visa length, not your graduation date.
Submit a valid Graduate Route application before January 1, 2027: you receive the current 2-year permission.
Submit on or after January 1, 2027: you receive 18 months.
PhD and other doctoral graduates: keep 3 years regardless of application date, according to UKCISA .
You apply for the Graduate Route once your university confirms your final result to the Home Office, before your Student visa expires. A bachelor's or master's graduate finishing in mid or late 2026 still qualifies for two years by submitting before the January 2027 cutoff.
What this means for your plans
If you are a Canadian finishing a UK bachelor's or master's degree in 2026, apply for the Graduate Route as soon as your university confirms your result instead of waiting. A gap between graduation and application does not disqualify you, but a gap that pushes submission past January 1, 2027 cuts your visa from 24 months to 18.
Eighteen months still gives you a runway to find graduate-level work and switch into the Skilled Worker route if an employer sponsors you. Start networking and applying for jobs before your course ends rather than after: the shorter window leaves less room to search once you graduate.
The government's own impact assessment projects around 12,000 fewer student visa applications a year in the long run because of the change, per ICEF Monitor. That reflects prospective students weighing a shorter post-study window against the cost of a UK degree, not a new barrier for anyone already enrolled.
