What the Graduate Route offers
The Graduate Route lets international students switch from a Student visa into an unsponsored work status after finishing their UK degree. You do not need a job offer or an employer with a sponsor licence, and you work in any role at any skill level, or run your own business, for the length of the visa.
Eligibility
You must hold current Student or Tier 4 permission from an approved UK higher education provider and have successfully completed a relevant qualification, meaning a bachelor's degree, master's degree, PhD, or certain other eligible courses. You need to meet the study-in-the-UK time requirement: for courses of 12 months or less you must have completed the full course in the UK, and for longer courses you need at least 12 months of study in the UK. You apply from inside the UK before your Student permission expires.

Cost
Budget £937 for the application fee, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge at £1,035 for each year of permission granted. A 2-year grant means roughly £2,070 in surcharge on top of the application fee, so plan for this cost alongside your final year of tuition and living expenses.
The 2027 shortening and what is behind it
The UK government published its immigration white paper, Restoring Control Over the Immigration System, on 12 May 2025. It set out plans to cut the Graduate Route from 2 years to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates, reported by The PIE News and ICEF Monitor . The stated aim is to push graduates toward sponsored skilled work routes sooner rather than staying on an unsponsored visa. PhD graduates keep the 3-year term regardless of when they apply. The change applies based on your application date, not your graduation date, so a student who graduates in mid-2026 and applies for the Graduate Route before the end of 2026 still gets the full 2 years.
What the 2024 government review found
Before the white paper, the Home Secretary asked the Migration Advisory Committee to run a rapid review of the Graduate Route, published on 14 May 2024. The MAC review found no significant evidence of abuse of the route, concluded graduate visa holders have a broadly positive fiscal impact through tax paid while working and low use of public funds, and recommended the government keep the route in its current form. The government accepted that recommendation in 2024. The later decision to shorten the route to 18 months came from the separate May 2025 white paper on overall net migration, not from the MAC's findings.
Work rights on the Graduate Route
There is no restriction on the type of job, sector or number of hours you work. Self-employment and running your own business are also allowed. If a UK employer offers you a sponsored role during your Graduate Route period, you switch into the Skilled Worker visa from inside the UK without needing to leave and reapply from your home country, and time on the Skilled Worker visa eventually counts toward settlement.
How to apply
Apply online through the UK government's visa service once your university has confirmed your results and reported course completion to the Home Office. Processing normally takes a matter of weeks, and you work while your application is under consideration if you applied before your Student permission expired.
What this means for ASEAN applicants
If you are choosing a UK master's start date and want the full 2-year window, plan your course so you graduate and apply for the Graduate Route before 31 December 2026. Later intakes should factor the 18-month term into their return-on-investment calculation against Australia, Canada or a PhD track, which keeps the longer 3-year allowance either way. Since the route stays unsponsored regardless of the length change, use the time to build UK work experience and line up a Skilled Worker sponsor before your permission runs out.
Dependants and family members
Whether your dependants join you on the Graduate Route depends on whether they held permission as your dependant during your Student visa. If they did, they usually apply alongside you for a matching Graduate Route dependant visa. Check the exact dependant rules for your situation before you commit to bringing family, since UK dependant rules for taught masters students changed separately from the Graduate Route length change and are handled under different conditions from research degree dependants.
A practical timeline
Start planning your Graduate Route application in your final term, once your university confirms it will report your results and course completion to the Home Office on time. Apply as soon as you have your final results rather than waiting for your physical certificate, since the visa application does not require the physical degree certificate itself. Keep your Student visa valid until your Graduate Route application is submitted, since applying late after your permission expires means losing eligibility entirely.
