UK PGCE and Canadian Teacher Certification: Practicum and Coursework Requirements by Province

By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Feb 21, 2026 • Canadians Studying Abroad

TL;DR

Teacher certification is provincial, so a UK PGCE goes through a separate assessment in every province you want to teach in. Ontario's process runs through the Ontario College of Teachers, which reviews your coursework and supervised teaching practice against its own standard rather than accepting UK Qualified Teacher Status automatically.

  • 🎓 A PGCE alone does not certify you anywhere in Canada. Each provincial regulator runs its own comparison against your transcript

  • 📩 Ontario requires your documents within one year of starting your application, plus a Sexual Abuse Prevention Program before certification

  • 🏠 Certification in one province does not automatically carry over to another

  • ⏱️ Contact the regulator in your target province directly, since published guides change and specific coursework gaps are assessed transcript by transcript

UK PGCE and Canadian Teacher Certification: Practicum and Coursework Requirements by Province

Education is provincial, and so is teacher certification

Canada has no single national teaching license. Each province and territory runs its own certifying body, so a UK Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) does not carry one Canada-wide answer. It gets assessed separately in Ontario, separately in British Columbia, and separately again anywhere else you might want to teach.

That matters if your plan involves flexibility, such as starting in one province and moving later. Certification earned in one province is not automatically valid in another, so a second move can mean a second application process.

How Ontario assesses a PGCE

In Ontario, the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) runs the certification process for internationally educated teachers, including PGCE holders. OCT states that each country has its own document requirements and directs applicants to a country-specific guide rather than a single generic international form.

OCT compares your PGCE coursework and your supervised teaching practice against Ontario's own teacher education standard. It requires every document within one year of starting your application, and it requires every applicant, UK-trained or Ontario-trained, to complete its Sexual Abuse Prevention Program before it issues a certificate.

A PGCE is a one-year, postgraduate route built on top of an existing undergraduate degree, which differs structurally from Ontario's own concurrent and consecutive teacher education models. That structural difference is one reason OCT reviews a PGCE transcript individually rather than granting blanket equivalency.

What changes if you target a different province

Outside Ontario, each province runs a body with the same basic function as OCT but its own separate process, document list and timeline. British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and the other provinces and territories each have their own teacher certification authority, and none of them defers automatically to Ontario's decision or to each other's.

This guide does not repeat specific coursework or practicum requirements for provinces outside Ontario, because each regulator publishes and updates its own criteria and assesses PGCE holders individually rather than against a fixed table. Contact the regulator in your specific target province directly for its current document list before you assume your Ontario result, if you have one, transfers.

What to prepare regardless of province

Start this process before you move. Document requests from a UK university or teaching regulator take longer once you are no longer in the country, and every added month of delay is a month you are not certified to teach.

What a coursework or practicum mismatch usually looks like

A PGCE typically runs one academic year, concentrated heavily on classroom placement after you already hold an undergraduate degree in your teaching subject. Some Canadian teacher education programs run longer or spread practicum hours differently across two or more terms. When a regulator flags a gap, it is usually about the total volume or the spread of supervised practice, not about whether you completed any practicum at all.

How long the full process realistically takes

Collecting documents from a UK university and a UK regulator commonly adds weeks to months to your timeline, especially once you have left the UK and are requesting records from a distance. Add this lead time on top of whatever processing time your target province's regulator quotes for the rest of your file, rather than assuming the two run at the same pace.

The Sexual Abuse Prevention Program runs separately from your academic review

OCT requires every certifying teacher, regardless of where they trained, to complete its Sexual Abuse Prevention Program. This course runs separately from your coursework and practicum comparison, so passing it does not substitute for that comparison, and finishing the comparison does not exempt you from the course.

Planning for more than one province

If your plan involves flexibility to teach in more than one province over time, budget for more than one application. Certification earned in Ontario does not transfer automatically to British Columbia, Alberta or any other province, so factor a second document collection round and a second timeline into your planning now rather than after you move. Check the current application fee on each regulator's own site rather than budgeting from a number you saw elsewhere, since these fees change.

Keep your own copies of every transcript and every professional standing statement you submit, along with dates you sent them. If a regulator's office loses a document or your file stalls, your own paper trail gets you back on track faster than re-requesting everything from a UK university you are no longer physically near.
